Is this something to worry about?

Hi. My daughter who's 3 has been ill since saturday night- it started off with vomiting and diarrhea which went on for 24 hours. It stopped but that's mostly because she hadn't eaten or drunk anything. There was temperature of 38 to begin with but it has gone up to 40 since- the temperature doe s drop after calpol down to 38. She herself seems t be a bit off. She did eat quite a bit this morningbut nothing since.

We are quite far away from the nearest hospital so i am not quite sure whether i should call an ambulance or not- our gp refused to visit her at home and i didn't want to drag her across the town in this crazy wind with her fever and risk for it to get worse only t be sent home.she's never been ill for more than 24 hours so I am not quite sure as to what to do now.

If it was me ( it's not, and you know your dd best!) I would keep on top of the fever with calpol/ nurofen through the night, and just offer drinks. If she was no better in the morning I would go to GP. For me, I would not go to a&e or out of hours with what you have described.
Hope she feels better soon, it's horrid when they are poorly.

I agree with jennifer hold out till tomorrow morning. there's lots of bugs/viruses going around atm and she could have picked up one after another.

but the gp should have offered some advice to help you.

She's refusing drinks and is just spitting them out- hopefully what she had in the morning will be enough. I'm giving her calpol where possible.
My gp was a rude twat refusing to even offer advice over the phone just saying to make an appointment! I will see how she does overnight and probably go from there. She does sleep a lot- over the last 3 days sge's only been awake 4 hours per day tops.

You need to keep her hydrated is 5ml fluid every ten mins or so. Will she suck on an ice Polly if she won't drink?

Sleeping lots is normal when poorly but do major sure she is rousable when she is asleep if at any point she isn't then get help, call 999 a child that can't be woken when poorly is an emergency.

When did she last pee?

Bea, last pee was yesterday morning.

If she has not been to the loo since yesterday - she needs a and e tonight - phone NHS direct or OOH they will give you proper advice - if she was mine I would take her in.

You really need to up the fluid intake until you see a Dr tomorrow.
I think its a just a bug. But dont let jer become dehydrated.
Offer very regular small amounts as suggested above.

What's the main symptom/s that are worrying you? Is it the temp? Or the lack of liquids or D and V?

Has she still got D and V?

I would go and try and wake her, offer any drink/liquid you have that she may have, an ice lolly, fruit or anything, take her temp and put her on the loo or check her nappy (as appropriate)

The main thing that worries me is that her temperature is so persistent- usually it doesn't go higher than 38.5 and only lasts a day or so.

She actually just woke up asking for a drink, and had about 1/3 cup of water, asked to play and went back to sleep as if nothing happened.

I sat her on the potty before bed, she didn't do anything, but is passing AWFUL SMELLING gas. It's like a gas chamber in here!

I'm on hold with NHS Direct as I type, waiting for someone to pick up the call, will see what they advice.

My then 12mo was like this last oct. She became v dehydrated. You need to syringe water in every few mins for quite a whole til they pick up. Her lips went dry and hands cold (although she had a temp) and she was so sleepy. It was horrible. Hope you DD is better soon. Get some fluids in her even if she protests a lot.

SkiBum, that sounds a lot like we've got going on.

So, spoke to NHS Direct, they said to monitor her temp overnight and give fluids- even force them down her. And if her temp goes above 40/ she vomits again/ or starts to complain of stomach ache to get her into a&e straight away. Otherwise see how the night goes and take her to the GP tomorrow (that's if I will get an appointment). SO, fingers crossed!

Hope she feels better and picks up quickly - take lots of beakers/cups by the bed for the night and I would set an alarm and try a drink again 3hrs from her last one- if temp goes to 40 again or you are worried just take her in -

Thank you, yes we did have a good night. She woke up all perky and hungry, did a massive pee and is now playing with puzzles. The temperature is still at 38 but she seems happy so it looks like it's all going to be allright.
