Minor temp - advice?

DS (2yrs 6mo) has a cold. A real stinker complete with cough and snot.

He has a temp of 39 degrees, but is happy in himself IYSWIM, he's been playing a bit, but mostly curled up on me and watching DVD's - typical sick kid stuff.

But... he's breathing quite "pant-ily" and the temp isn't really coming down with calpol, dropping to low 38's instead. He's due his next dose about now, but I'm delaying it for a bit so he gets it before bed.

What point would you drag yours out to the GP? (Disclaimer: I'm paranoid and don't cope well when others are ill!)

I'd ring now if his breathing isn't as it should be. The temperature wouldn't bother me, I am a great believer in a high temperature being the body's way of killing whatever bug it is but the breathing would worry me.

I think that's a pretty high fever tbh

I'd call OOH and see if they want to see him

Hope he is well soon xx

Yep, raised resps and a temp that isn't coming down with calpol probably nerds looking at. Have you tried nhs direct?

Badvoc · 27/03/2013 17:37

Call your gp and get him seen at end of surgery or walk in centre.

Dd is the same age and has had exactly this this week. I'd get him seen. Also if he's big for his age he may need a weight based dosage to bring temp down so ask about that.

ArabellaBeaumaris · 27/03/2013 19:56

If Calpol isn't bringing his temp down I would get him checked out. Hope he feels better soon.

How is he Carpe?

SunflowersSmile · 28/03/2013 14:40

Hoping all well Carp. My ds age 3 regularly goes between 39 and 40 if unwell. I alternate calpol and nurofen. It does mean you don't always have to wait 4 hours before giving more medicine to try and relieve temp and symptoms.
