Croup in 4.5 yo

Any suggestions on the best ways to relieve croup in a 4 nearly 5yo. Poor thing is really poorly and is finding the bouts of coughing really distressing.
He never had croup as a baby but is prone to wheezy chest infections like his asthmatic dad.
I can't get him to sleep even though he's exhausted, calpol & cough mixture have done nothing for him. Currently just doing cuddles and reassuring him through the coughing.
Any suggestions on how to soothe him enough so he can get some sleep?

Go to the hospital and get some steroids for him.
Hope he feels better soon!

Open a window the fresh air is great at relieving it

Take him into the bathroom, close window and doors and run hot tap to fill bath/turn shower on hottest setting so room becomes full of steam.

Thanks will give them a go, and if we don't get anywhere will go to docs for something stronger.

Definitely go to the Gp. My three year old has this problem sometimes and is given a one off steroid tablet.
It works quickly.

Steam, steam and more steam. It's the best stuff for croup. Both my dcs suffer even DS who is 8 and really should have grown out of it by now.
