How to give antibs on an empty stomach without starving him??

DS has been put on flucloxacillin (penicillin based antibiotic) to try to clear up a mysterious rash/skin infection. When I got home and looked at the bottle it says to take 4 times a day on an empty stomach - either an hour before food or two hours after. I can't figure out how to manage this as his stomach is never empty! He's 15 months old and breastfed and feeds a lot, day and night. So I gave him his first dose this evening, an hour and a half after dinner but he's now nursing. Anyone know if milk is going to prevent the antibs from getting through?
Also, would you do the 4 doses just during the day or space them out across 24 hours (ie give it to him in the night too)?

DS is on this foul potion at the mo too. He is 2.3 and I have struggled with the dising instructions too. Could the GP not prescribe a topical preparation if it's a skin thing?

Tbh I have had to admit defeat. I can manage to give it an hour before food at breakfast but then lunch and mid afternoon dose more tricky. So he just gets it as far apart from food as I can manage..... not sure about the milk tho, think would try for a topical in your positiin. You may be able to get another script without going to another appt. Maybe just phone practice and see what is recommended?

I aaked the pharmacist whether I could give all doses during waking hours and he said yes- no need to wake.

Dising? Dosing.

Mine had this recently and tbh I just ignored the empty stomach thing and gave it 4 times a day, before meals if possible.

And yes 4 doses in waking hours.

DD2 was prescribed ab's for an umbilical infection when she was just 10 days old.

When I got home and read the instructions it said on an empty stomach too. Empty stomach? Yeah right, she was BF and constantly attatched.

I went back and spoke to a different GP and they agreed that it was a ridiculous expectation - I was given a topical ointment.

I'd go back if I were you.

Thanks all - I think you might be right, that we'll be better off with an ointment. He's only had two doses so far, and I feel horrible as I have to force it down him because it tastes so awful. He sees me open the fridge now and just starts shaking his head!

If you do persist with the liquid, I can recommend waving a small piece of chocolate at your DS as an inducement. If you're not anti-choc. Although it doesn't really square with the whole 'no food' thing...

Hope you get the topical.
