Cough mixture recommendation??

Very basic question, can any one recommend a good cough mixture? Each time I go to a chemist they recommend different brands and most of them do absolutely nothing. Any good cough mixtures out there, for phlegmy coughs. We have coughs in the family at the moment. The only thing I have found which brings up the phlegm is Carrageen Moss, an Irish seaweed. The problem is that the kids won't take it. Any other suggestions? Thanks. The kids are 5, 9 and 12.

The only thing I use is honey and glycerine. It's not really a cough mixture as such but, because it 'lines' the throat a bit, it makes it less painful for them to cough out the phlegm. Small child here is only a little over two, but DSis uses this for her 5yo and 7 year old to great success, so it might work with yours.

I don't think cough mixtures work.
