ds leaking toe!

my ds 7 has been complaining for the past 2 days that his big toe has been hurting, he has just showed me and its all bruised and leaking puss

do i wait to see the doctor on monday or take him to walk in centre or am i being too fussy?

I'd go to a walk in centre. Get some anti bios, get him fixed quicker. Could his shoes be too small?

Id take him to the walk in centre - it sounds infected, I wouldn't leave it for the whole weekend. Did he bang it on something, or has he got something stuck in it? Poor chap - hope he's better soon

You could try letting him sit with his foot in a bowl of fairly warm water - that might draw some of the pus and ease the pain, putting some salt in the water might help too.

I would get it checked out and what kurri said about so asking it in warm water with salt.

Is it an in growing toe nail maybe?

Clear pus or white, thick pus? Is it where the nail lies? If so its just an infection and will respond well to cleaning and having antiseptic on it. I've had these myself as has dh. My tried and tested method to drain the pus is a footbath of very, very hot water (boiled and cooled but still hot) with liberal amounts of salt dissolved in it. Then dry it and put some antiseptic cream on it and perhaps a plaster overnight. I personally wouldn't go to the drs for this, I would repeat the footbath as required but it should clear up over the weekend. It will still be tender until the pus drains away, which should relieve it somewhat!

Very very not water will encourage inflammation, pain and infection.

Tepid salt water foot bath for 5 minutes then cover with antiseptic and dressing. See GP Monday to assess for systemic infection and antibiotics.

thank you all its green pus leaking from the side of his toenail, he has always had awkward toenails to cut so I'm guessing its an ingrowing one.
I'm going to do the salt water thing with him now and take him straight to the walk in centre in the morning as he is screaming with pain as soon as me or dh touch it

Ds 1 had an ingrowing toenail aged 18 after he cut them way too short into the edge of the toe. He needed 2 courses of anti bios to fix it.

DS1 had this on a finger. I sterilised a needle, lanced it, drained the pus and applied fucidin cream. Twelve hours later it was much less inflamed, but I put fucidin cream on it for another couple of days for good measure.

I also advised him never to let a paronichia get that bad again!

I'd go and get some magnesium sulphate paste. Seem to remember Mum heating it slightly when my skin got bad. He might not let you do this if its that sore.

Otherwise warm water heavily dosed with salt sounds good.

I pressed my toe nail and emptied the puss (very painful), and then applied Fucidin ointment over about 5 days and it was better very quickly. It is excruciatingly painful though, poor boy! :(

is his toe red?

if it is mark the edge of the redness with biro so you can see if the redness is spreading or receeding

DH is a paramedic and says take him to the walk in centre, it's infected and needs antibiotics.

Green pus? Get thee to the walk in centre! Poor boy must be in so much pain.

My dd had this a few weeks back for the second time, she has in growing toenails. She had antibiotics the first time but the second time the GP suggested holding off and we were given a solution to clean toe with, looked like iodine? and then applied magnesium sulphate paste with a dressing at night to draw infection out. This worked well. However hers wasn't too badly infected only just starting to produce yellow pus, with the green and bad pain I would def get it checked out.

I had this a couple of months ago. It was an infected in-growing toenail. I was in agony. I had it drained and the doctor said it can be extremely painful.
