Itchy Bits on five year old! What will soothe it?!

My five year old occasionally has an itchy bottom or vulva. We've been to the doctor a few times but nothing has come of it.
It happens irregularly and only at night. Last night was one of them - she was writhing around and crying because she had an 'itchy foof' - all fine this morning.
She was wearing a nightie so no irritation or chafing from PJs.
I was wondering if anybody has any experience of this and what you recommend to soothe itchy private parts?

Omg, I was going to post something similar, but my dd is itching all the time. I've an appointment with the gp tomorrow morning, and think it may be thrush as she's just come off a course of antibiotics.
It's strange that your dd only itches at night time.
Does she have a bath every night ie could it be the soap/ bubble bath?
What about an imbalance of ph levels?

Btw, my dd is 3 and a half, and I've looked down there, and she's red and sore, but no worms here.

She doesn't look sore, and we put Oilatum in the bath rather than bubble bath as her little brother has excema - it's supposed to be mild.
We put a cold flannel on her bits last night which helped a bit, just felt a bit helpless as she was sooo uncomfortable, poor dabber.

I would also say it sounds like worms. My dd had the same and it only happened in the evening . I did have a look and saw a couple of worms wriggling about her bits!!

worms worms worms!

go in in the night when she is asleep and have a look at her botto with a torch-there will almost certainly be some wrigglers

whole family needs to take a tablet and you need to wash the sheets on a very hot wash

all kids get them

Mine has this. If is worms the tablet works like magic. However I have sensitive itchy bits, and I think she has got some of this. Phenergen and Eurex can both work

I would say threadworms too.

You may well not see them....I would treat anyway, with Ovex. If its worms, give it 48 hours and the itching will have gone.

My dd is 8 and has had this on and off. She's a pyjama girl, so takes off her pj bottoms before bed which has helped some chaffing. I took her to the Gp has she suffers badly from psoriasis, but the Gp said it wasn't related. Gp prescribed Canesten cream for 'soothing'

However some nights dd has been in agony over a itchy bum. Every time I've looked I've never seen any wrigglers but I have treated with the worm tablets and its eased it by the next night. So it must have been worms.

I've treated her 3 times for worms now and never seen one.

I've had a good look at my DDs nether regions - no sign of redness or worms (I google imaged them so I knew what to look for!). Will see how she gets on tonight, I suppose, see if last night was a one off. If more itching then off to the docs. Thanks all for the comments.

They come out after they have gone to sleep. You need to look about half an hour later with a torch.

If its only occasionally, I doubt its worms, although worth checking.

I used to suffer occasional itchy bits when I was around her age or maybe a bit older. My mum used to put baby powder in my knickers if I got up in the night. I'm sure it was only a placebo but it seemed to work.

Hey. We went to the gp, and got told to get Canesten cream as it looked like thrush. Since we've used the cream she hasn't scratched as much, so seems like it has worked. There were no worms, and she had a good look too.

Hope you get some more answers from your gp.

Another one saying worms.

Dd had the same symptoms, it wasn't every night but she would wake up crying because of the itching. We tried all the itch relieving creams including caneston, took her to the GP, did everything he recommended but she was still itching.

In the end we gave her an Ovex because nothing else was working and it cleared up and she hasn't had an issue since.

I would personally try that before anything else now.

Get ovex over counter. Whole family take one tablet. Wash bedding pj's etc. About £7 I think.
remind about hand hygiene.

Agree with the rest, if it's upsetting her it's probably worms, dd was like your daughter when she got them. Sometimes dd (7) does get a bit pink and itchy, probably because she's not great at wiping herself, we use aveeno cream for this, she puts it on herself and it soothes her.

Could be a reaction to washing powder or fabric conditioner , or the soap she is using. Simple soap is great for sensitive skin.

Glad GP helped, Longdistance. DD had been fine the last few nights again - it really does only happen in isolated incidents and for one night. Thanks for the soothing ideas here - will keep them handy for the next time!
