Dd and migraines

Dd is 10 and has been suffering from migraines for a while now I think, although I've only made the connection today. She's had a severe headache all day at school today, felt sick, had tummy ache. When she told a playground supervisor at break she was told to sit on a bench for a while and tell her teacher when she got back to the classroom, which she didn't as she didn't think they'd do anything. When she got home I gave a paracetamol and she went to bed until about 7pm, nothing to eat.

My question is, what do I do about school? I think she needs to be sent home when she gets a migraine but obviously the school don't know she's a sufferer. Should I get a doctors note?

I'm a migraine sufferer myself so know how awful it is. If I got one at work I would have to go home so I really feel for dd having to sit through lessons today.

By the way, she's fine now having rested.

My Ds is 12 and has had severe migraines from around age 3 and was diagnosed at age 7.
I have to say primary school were very good, medication kept in school and the teachers were aware that he needed to take it promptly and be sent home. I had to go in and talk to the individual teacher at the start of each new year to explain, and to check they were happy to have him back the following day (after the inevitable vomiting that came with it).
I didn't need a doctors note, but his medication was prescription only.

I'm finding secondary school a little trickier as different lessons are with different teachers, it's impossible to make them all aware..but they have his condition on file, his medication is kept with the school nurse and he is old enough now to explain to a teacher why he needs to be excused straight away.

I'm guessing at 10 she is in last year of primary? I'd go in and talk to them about possibly keeping some painkillers at school as the sooner she is able to take them the better. Good luck, you have my sympathy.

Feverfew helps...we are a long line of migraine sufferers... also craniosacral osteopathy...

Has your DD been to the gp for a diagnosis?

If not,I would make this the first port of call.

I agree with Verysmallsqueak, get a GP appointment first and see what they recommend in terms of medication

I suffer from migraines and its utterly miserable, there's no way I can do anything but lie in a dark room and try to sleep it off, but I do find Migraleve tablets usually help a bit, I'm not sure if your DD is old enough to take them though so speak to the doctor

Can I join you too please. DS (10) has suffered abdominal migraines for years and recently had his first proper migraine. - headache, sick, fell asleep.

I am wondering how often migraines occur - no-one else in our family gets them.

I am trying to get a gp appointment with the same gp that investigated his tummy aches, but is proving hard as he seems to be semi-retired now!!

My DD also gets migraines we have got a diagnosis from the GP - particularly after she projectile vomited over her teacher during one particularly bad one. At 9 she is too young for the specific migraine meds however, the GP prescribed calpol and metoclopramide that school keep and give when DD tells them. It is hard for her the meds need to be got in fast to really help. Stress is one of DD's triggers.
