Swollen toes in 6yo

My son seems to have slightly reddened swollen toes in about 3/4 toes on each foot (not the big toe). He says they're not sore when I press on them or when he walks/runs, and hasn't complained in any way (and he's not one to keep quiet about his discomforts).
To be honest, I think they may have been like this for weeks, and were also like this last winter if I remember right. His shoes are well fitted.

Any ideas? Also, am I a terrible mum for putting this down to "just one of those things" and not taking him to the doctor yet?

Thank you very much :)

It could be chilblain, try to google pictures. Does he walks a lot barefoot or just with socks on cold floor? Are his toes itchy? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilblains

Thanks Gordon - yes that's a good thought. Don't seem to be red patches, more red all over, but they happen in winter and yes he does get itchy toes.

Gordonpym, just wanted to recommend you for MN doctorate - it was indeed chillblains (as confirmed by GP). Thanks for the post.
