Fever, and Fever again

My DS had a fever on Tuesday (top was 39.5C/103F in the evening), recovering a bit on Wednesday. Recovered enough (we thought) to let him go back to his nursery yesterday and today. Seriously, no fever or any other symptoms.

But today, late morning, the nursery rang me to say his fever is back to 39.5/103 and can they give him Calpol. Can they heck! I said yes, and apparently that helped a bit, but the temperature is creeping back up again.

When we saw the high temperature on Tuesday we rang NHS Direct and they took us through the other symptoms (or lack thereof): no rash, he can touch his chin to his chest, etc. He seemed dizzy, off his feed, but no shaking or fits, etc. We were actually releived when he started showing signs of a bog-standard cold (prior to this, there was no hint as to what kind of an infection it might be).

But, in between, he seemed to be pretty normal. Is it two different colds, or something that was stealthy and hid for a while?

Any info gratefully received...

Oh, he's 2.9 years, if this helps.

It could be a urine infection. I would get a urine sample to the GP or OOH if his temperature stays this high. Untreated UTIs are serious and must be treated with antibiotics.

Thanks for that tip. Would he have a urine infection if he doesn't seem to have any issues with weeing? I haven't noticed any pain or difficulty.

Temp has gone down now, again, but his ear is very full-of-wax (and apparently a bit hurty).

DD (2.11) has had exactly this. High temp (39.5) Sunday. High Monday. Absolutely fine Tuesday and Wednesday. High again Thursday (40).

She's been eating slightly less than usual but, apart from being tired, no other symptoms. Her cousin had it the week before. In our case it was just viral.
