HELP! Is this chicken pox?!?!

Please look at the photos on my profile.

Just got DS nearly 15 months ready for bed and spotted them on the soles of his feet. One big one on his right, two/three smaller ones on his left.

Does this look like chicken pox to anyone? He hasn't been anywhere near an infected child as far as I know and seemed totally fine today and when I put him to bed.

What do I do if it is? He's my 1st

Can't see your pics but chicken pox normally starts at the top and heads downwards from what i remember, would be odd to stay on feet, someone may correct me

Can't see photo as your profile not public.

check his body and see if he has any on his tummy or back. Spot look like blisters when they first come out.

I can't get onto your profile for some reason, but chicken pox looks like blisters, and more commonly starts on the tummy, chest or back. If it IS chicken pox, then you need to keep him away from other people (so, at home, then) until the blisters have scabbed over and are starting to clear up. There isn't anything you can do, unfortunately, except dab him with Calamine Lotion if he is very itchy (and perhaps cut his nails so he can't scratch, to prevent scarring).

Chicken pox usually starts on the torso and is characterised by feeling unwell for a couple of days beforehand, cross, fever etc. They appear quickly, mostly on the body and head at first ime and then blister.

If it's just the feet, it could be hand foot and mouth. Check the hands/fingers/palms and inside the mouth for ulcers.

Could be an allergy too.

Is he otherwise well?

Hand foot and mouth causes blisters on palms and soles of feet. Google it and see if that looks more likely. Check his mouth for ulcers.

Ahhhh!

I've double checked my profile and pretty sure it's public now.

He hasn't got anything on the rest of his body but haven't checked his hands. I'll do that now.

He was fine today and this evening. All ok except these spots

Okay, just checked his hands/fingers/palms and there aren't any spots.

Looks like hand foot and mouth to me... My youngest has just had it... he was dribbly and out of sorts then I noticed the spots on his feet... then hands. Hands were definitely last to get spots!
Chickenpox normally starts on the torso I think... Both my boys started with them on their backs.
Hope he's ok! :)

Sounds like hand, foot and mouth. DD only had this in her mouth - so it is possible to have one of hands, feet or mouth.

Thanks for all your replies.

If it is HF&M does anyone have any advice? Are I & DP likely to have it too? Are we contagious to others?

We've checked ourselves and don't have any spots although I've have a really sore bit on my lip for no reason the past few days (felt like a lump in there).

You definitely don't have to have it in all the places, it's only called hand foot and mouth because that's where it affects most. Both of mine have just had it. 5yo had a few ulcers, several blisters mainly on her fingers and a few on her feet. DS had them all over his body, mainly arms and legs and bottom though with the ones on his feet and hands blistering.

Hard to see from your pics. DD started with just one blister, couple more a few hours later and then about 10 on each hand within 12 hours and several on her feet. They're oval shaped, slighly red round the edges, raised and may or may not blister.

HFM is extremely contagious but it's likely you've had it. Most adults have immunity to it to some extent, but it is possible to get it. You don't have to be quarantined if you're well with it. You treat the symptoms (ie sore mouth might need ibuprofen/calpol, lollies etc) and wait for it pass which it does within a week.

Both of mine were okay with it. Both had a mild cough and ds was a bit irritable but it wasn't too bad.

Thanks you for your posts. I was so worried about chicken pox after the thread on AIBU as I took DS out to the shops today. I know I couldn't have known he had it if he did but just felt so guilty.

Obviously I'll keep an eye on him and his spots. I've read the NHS site about HF&M, he's not at nursery but I'll keep him away from his groups for a bit.

if it is CP he will have had a fever in the last few days and be generally feeling unwell. The spots come after. My two had it at 5 and 18 months, so thankfully we are done!

Just to add chickenpox doesn't always come with preceding fever or illness - mine were both fine until they had it, and pretty fine during just low grade temp and hundreds of spots.

It sounds more like HFM to me but you'll probably know by morning and if not keep him away from people as a precaution
