Fecal odor emanating from DS 6yrs, what could it be?

Sorry for TMI.... But getting really concerned.
For the last couple of weeks or so, my DS who is almost 6 has been smelling as if he'd farted, only he hasn't!
At first I thought maybe he hadn't wiped his bum properly, but there are no marks on his pants, and we give him a wash every evening.
Today we sat for lunch and DH noticed that the smell just seems to emanate our of his bum without an actual "fart" following. DS doesn't seem to notice. He hasn't complained of tummy ache.
He has a healthy diet, lots of vegetables, fruit, water, he also likes the occasional treat.
I am getting worried, I don't want him to develop any gut problems and I really don't want him to be ostracised at school (luckily hasn't happened yet)!

Does anyone have any experience of this?
Thanks.

Is he constipated?

Timetoask · 13/01/2013 20:20

He had a poo today, but I have to honest, I don't know if he is having normal bowel movements everyday at school. I am going to have to ask him everyday.
Do you think constipation might be the problem? It is very whiffy.

I know that constipation in children is v common and that it can go unnoticed. Also, that the poo really smells bad, so presumably farts would too! I would keep an eye on regular poos and don't be afraid to ask GP if you are worried.

My daughter was much older (17) but she had the most dreadful pooey smell, especially when she broke wind. She was diagnosed with T1 diabetes and after that she smelt bad when she had high blood sugars.

Hello xxxmrsxxxx,
I hope your dd is coping well with her diabetes. My father is diabetic so I have always been concerned about it.
May I ask, what other symptoms did you notice in your daughter? Thanks
