My son had an emergency hernia operation late at night on the first. His intestines and appendix were in his scrotal sack with his testicles. We're both at home and I've been told to give him 50mg paracetamol for the pain with at least 6 hours between each dose. He's now able to last 8-9 hours between doses. Does any know roughly how long he'll need painkillers for? I've been told not to carry him in a sling for 2 weeks.

I probably should have said he's 7 weeks old tomorrow and weighs 5kg. I think that's around 11 pounds.

You need to call the ward where you were and ask them for advice. If you can't get hold of them then try your GP or maybe a local pharmacist for advice.

I have, all they could tell me was to continue for as long as he is in pain. They didn't know how long it would be. I've been told he'll need them approx every 6 hours for a few days and that an adult has to avoid lifting for 2 weeks and will need painkillers for a few days. I'll probably have to find out how long an adult with a low pain threshold needs medication for and use that as a guide along with the sound of my baby's cry.
