Toddler diarrhoea medication

LO (15 months) has had diarrhoea since 23 Dec. it improves and worsens, but has been constant. Have sent stool sample, but doc is unconcerned as long as he's hydrated, lively and wanting to eat. He is. The trouble is he says it just has to run its course and can take up to 3-4 weeks in some cases. I don't think cutting 4 back teeth is helping...
The problem is, there's no way he can go to nursery. I work F/T. DH is overseas until April. Parents have already had him since Thu and I can't really ask much more of them. Can I ask the doctor to prescribe something? Do you know if they will? When I had a phone consultation he said they wouldn't normally - but as he's otherwise well and I can not afford more time off work as I have just started a new role this week I want to ask. Do you know if there actually anything that can be given to wee ones? Pharmacy wouldn't sell anything as they said it has to be on prescription. I have an appointment with the doc on Mon so assuming it isn't clear ed up by then, should I press for medicine? Any advice please?

  • I have cut out dairy and been giving probiotic powder and very bland food etc

I know it sounds obvious but have you tried explaining to nursery and see if they will accept him? Our nursery had a 4 loose nappies rule but if you say that he has seen the doctor and is not unwell in himself just very loose they may be prepared to take him? Good luck.
