Blood in 3day old ds nappy

Tiny amount of fresh red blood in ds nappy at the front - he is 3 days old. My nipple has been bleeding though - could it be ingested milk? Do I need to get it checked out? And how urgently? No temperature and generally well.

Is it from his umbilicus? Is so then not to worry.

It's likely to be urates - google it & the nct leaflet about nappies. It's completely normal.

These are both good suggestions.

If you are always folding down the nappy so it isn't over the umbilical stump then it is unlikely to be blood from here.

The most likely cause is urate crystals - these lead to a pink/orange stain in the front of the nappy and come out in the urine. They tend to be visible in the first few days of life when the baby is slightly dehydrated and they are nothing to worry about.

This is certainly the most common cause for what parents consider to be blood in the urine. Ask your midwife, they should be due to see you.
