Hi I am a first time mum my baby boy is 24 days old and has a cold, his breathing sounds snotty and his eyes are watering, he seems to be feeding ok, just very sleepy. Is there anything I can give him at this young age?

Saline nose drops. Raise the head end of the crib by putting books under the legs. Steam by sitting with baby in the bathroom with hot tap running and door / windows closed. Feed as normal whether BF or FF. Never dilute formula.

If he gets hard to rouse from sleep or stops feeding has dry nappies or has a temperature he needs to see a doctor urgently.

Thank you, he is exclusively breast feeding and seems to be feeding ok, I have just changed his dirty nappy. I've tried the shower steam room, hoping that helps, it's just horrible to hear him all snuffly when breathing.

bonzo has covered it. You can't give anything.

My DC1 had a cold at 3/4 weeks old and it was horrible, I remember calling NHS Direct in the middle of the night and being so so worried, so you have my absolute sympathy.

Hope he gets well soon x

If u can't get hold of saline breast milk is also good for wiping eyes and cleaning nose. Keep waking him up to feed don't let him go longer than3-4 hours max! Watch the breathing if he is sucking in his chest or he gets any worse do not be afraid to take him to hospital. Hope he feels better soon. :(

Thank you, I had a much better night with him than I imagined I would, I've woken him to feed him and when on the breast his breathing got better, will do another steam room this morning. Your advice is invaluable Grin xx
