Perioptic infection - any doctors/opticians out there?

Feeling like a very bad mother.

Middle son complaining for a week or so that he had headaches and was generally under the weather - but all of mine have been.

Cue this morning he couldn't open his eyes or bare light on them. Straight to walk in the local hospital. Diagnosis - perioptical infection and bloods show 'significant infection'. I've never even heard of this - and of course scaring myself with Google. Has had one round of intravenous anti-biotics but they are struggling to get his temperature down.

Poor you . I let my son walk around with a broken wrist for a couple of days (unbeknownst to me.)

Don't google it , but do be reassured he's in the right place now.

Do you mean peri-orbital cellulitis? When there is swelling around the eyes and swollen eyelids?

This can be a big deal, largely because it can communicate with other areas within the head, but should respond well to treatment. However, it tends to be over diagnosed and the infection is usually "pre-septal", this means that it is further forward and likely to be less of a problem but should still be treated with IV antibiotics if severe. If he has no pain with eye movements then it's likely the latter.

Sounds like he's being treated now and they'll keep you up to speed on what's what.
