Involuntary head movements

DD2 (11) seems have developed what I can only describe as a head tremor! Her head wobbles about all over, but only when she is not focussed or concentrating on something. If she is busy, or talking, her head is still but as soon as the focus is gone, it starts to shake again.

Sometimes the movements are quite violent but she is in no pain. She says she is aware of it happening but cant stop it. It's only been a matter of weeks but I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this before I take her to the doctors. I dont really want her to be concious about this as so far she's ok about it.

She's quite a laid back child usually and started secondary school in Sept with no major problems.

The movements aren't constant, but come and go.

Tourette's?

Some kind of tic? Try a cranial chiropractor and see what they can do/if one thing going on with the nervous system that they can very gently help with. Look for a practitioner who uses SOT (a particular technique). If unsure you could always call them and ask questions first.

I hope not. I had a quick google at that but she doesnt have any of the other symptoms of tourettes. If it is, it is & we'll cope but I was just wondering if it was something anyone else had noticed in their preteen/teenage DC's and if they had grown out of it?

I would take her to the GP as soon as possible if this has been going on for a couple of weeks. It must be a little frightening for your DD. how is her balance?

It could be a lot if things or it may be nothing but please get her checked out.

Admin hope you and your DD are ok? Have you taken her to the GP yet? I agree with svrider that she needs to see a neurologist as soon as possible.

Just asked my medical professional DH and he recommends GP and neurologist as first port of call.

DH also says in his experience children with neck probs can present with erratic movements; he says neurologist first to rule out anything that may need treatment under a consultant and if nothing found then see cranial (chiro not osteo).

It's difficult to get a good feel for what your child has from the description but I expect you'll be referred to a general paediatrician as opposed to directly to a neurologist (unless you have private healthcare). Simple motor tics are far more common than Tourette's and children tend to grow out of them. However, it would be good for your child to be formally examined to consider other possibilities.

sounds like tic but agree you need to Get it checked. had similar with ds and gp sent him straight to a&e - because it was head\neck. was just tic which stopped a few months on..
