As the old thread is filling up I thought I would get a new one started!

This thread is for anyone with a child with asthma, or asthma type symptoms. Between us we have to much experience of inhalers, nebulisers, steroids, sats and all things asthma!

She seems to be getting worse, back on 2 hourly nebs. They've had to atrovent back in because the salbutamol was only just holding her

WellThatsLife · 25/11/2014 08:48

Hi sirzy, how's your ds, hope you've managed to avoid hospital. Waiting for consultant now, he doesn't want to send her home until her peak flow reaches 160

lollipoppi · 25/11/2014 15:55

Wellthats how's she doing now?
Sirzy how's your DS?

Sirzy · 25/11/2014 16:05

Hope your home now. How old is she?

He is better than he was, seems to be coping well on 5 puffs 4 hourly now. Been for his lung function test today and got a ct scan on Thursday so hopefully get some more answers then!

WellThatsLife · 25/11/2014 16:48

She's 12. We're still in as her peak flow hasn't improved so looks like it wil be tomorrow at the earliest!

Sirzy · 25/11/2014 16:56

Oh no, must be frustrating for you both.

OP posts:
WellThatsLife · 25/11/2014 17:13

It is. Last couple of times her 02 had dipped, although still in ok territory it's unusual for her

WellThatsLife · 26/11/2014 14:30

We're going home!

lollipoppi · 26/11/2014 17:48

Yayyyy! That calls for the 3 B's .... Brew, Bath, Bed
So pleased your home, glad she is on the mend Thanks

Sirzy · 26/11/2014 18:07

Glad she is home

WellThatsLife · 26/11/2014 23:06

She's not sounding good, waiting to see if we'll need to use the 24 hour pass we've got

Sirzy · 27/11/2014 07:32

Oh no how is she this morning?

OP posts:
WellThatsLife · 27/11/2014 11:08

We made through the night and she seems a lot better this morning so hopefully over the worst. Seeing gp tomorrow so see what he says

Sirzy · 27/11/2014 16:46

Glad you made it through the night. Hope that is a positive sign.

Took DS for his CT scan today, was a disaster so got to wait for another date to have it done with him sedated

OP posts:
lollipoppi · 27/11/2014 16:53

How did you get on at the GP?

Sirzy my dd had to have a ct scan not too long back, she had to be sedated too, they just gave her a little syringe of fluid, no needles involved

WellThatsLife · 27/11/2014 19:45

It's tomorrow we're seeing gp lolli. She's been much better today but she's getting tighter and wheezier as the evening's going on so keeping an eye on her

Sirzy · 27/11/2014 20:58

Evenings and into night is always the worse time of day isn't it!

Thats what I am hoping for Lolli, I thought they were being optimistic trying to do it without any sedation

OP posts:
WellThatsLife · 28/11/2014 12:32

Still got a wheeze, reducing to six puffs 6hourly tonight, reducing steroid by one tablet daily, got to monitor her peak flow and contact them if she starts to deteriorate

Sirzy · 28/11/2014 16:18

Fingers crossed she copes with the change

Hi I was wondering whether you experienced parents of asthma sufferers think this sounds like asthma.

Dd2 is 2.9. Diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea after recurrent viruses and tonsillitis. She has only had what seemed more like an asthma attack in the day once when the guinea pig cage was overdue for changing. At that time she didn't wheeze, but was constantly coughing until she had ventolin syrup. She has been admitted twice, the last time to HDU because she cyanosed during her nap. Since then she has had recurrent sleep apnoea with stridor at night often coughing and needing repositioning to allow her to breathe more easily. The GP gave us a blue salbutamol inhaler at our request (family history of allergies, asthma and atopy) and from the first night she took it her breathing has been more even, with less apnoea, less chest retractions and more steady breathing. Last night she had 3 rounds of 2 puffs in 10 breaths and wasn't better so I took her to A&E as she wasn't able to get breaths in even after I changed her position, her chest was retracting really hard, but she couldn't force past the obstruction. They were confused as to why I had the inhaler and said it would only be useful if she had a wheeze. She doesn't, but it helps. Can you have asthma without a wheeze?

Sirzy · 29/11/2014 07:22

Yes you can have asthma without a wheeze, DS rarely wheezes

Hi all, hope everyones dc are ok.

DD has settled right down since she was prescribed the preventer inhaler, 2 puffs of flixotide twice daily. However her night time cough has started up again this past week and last night she had a bad coughing fit where she was gasping for breath and ended up being violently sick Sad .

Im waiting til 9 so I can give her asthma nurse a call, her blue inhaler did the trick and she settled back to sleep eventually so hopefully she's just coming down with a cold or something.

SurfsUp1 · 01/12/2014 07:16

Hi Everyone,
I have a DS with asthma - only mild, so I take my hats of to those of you dealing with severe issues.

I was just wondering if anyone here had looked into the research addressing asthma with vinegar (i.e. eating/drinking it) and if so, have you found any child-friendly ways to increase vinegar intake in the diet?

lollipoppi · 01/12/2014 15:29

Surfs no I've never heard of that, do you mean increasing the amount of vinegar in their diet?

SurfsUp1 · 01/12/2014 21:24

Yeah! I'll see if I can find a link to the program I saw where it was discussed.
I suppose it sounds a bit "woo" but it was an episode from Australia's top science program which is generally amazingly well researched.
The vinegar/asthma thing was only a portion of the program, but the results that were being discussed were pretty amazing!
