As the old thread is filling up I thought I would get a new one started!

This thread is for anyone with a child with asthma, or asthma type symptoms. Between us we have to much experience of inhalers, nebulisers, steroids, sats and all things asthma!

Yes.
My ds1 was on both for a while when he was younger.
I used to give the montelukast in yoghurt.
Ds2 may be out on it in the spring to help with his bad hay fever.

PeppaIsACowbag · 08/10/2014 19:26

Ok thankyou will carry on as normal then. Will try the yoghurt trick!

lollipoppi · 08/10/2014 22:23

Poor baby, hope the antibiotics kick in soon
I 2nd the yoghurt trick, DS used to be on montelukast and he hated the texture of the granules, i always hid it in yoghurt Wink
Yes DS used to take both montelukast and his preventer together

Badvoc hope your DS is feeling better soon

DD is on the mend and off inhalers now

Sirzy how's your DS doing

PeppaIsACowbag · 09/10/2014 10:31

DD really hates the preventor inhaler, she takes the blue one fine but is really resisting the brown one, fighting to get away and crying and im worrying she's not getting the full dose. She has to have 2xpuffs twice a day, have you any tips to help her take it better? With her being only 2 I don't want her to become frightened of the inhaler incase she starts to fight the blue one too.

WellThatsLife · 09/10/2014 13:01

If it's becoming a real problem you can use the mask to give it to her in her sleep. It may also help if you let may play at giving the inhaler to her toys.

Unfortunately you will have to keep battling on.

PeppaIsACowbag · 09/10/2014 14:59

Thanks will try that. Had to swaddle her earlier to stop her from trying to pull it away. Least I know I can give in sleep if really have to.

I've just had the referral through for her appointment with the asthma nurse, she wants to visit dd at home, is this usual for first visits? I thought it would be at the GP or hospital.

lollipoppi · 09/10/2014 18:56

Dd is not yet 2, I pretend to do it on her teddy them on her, sometimes it works
They do eventually get used to it though, it just becomes part of their morning or evening routine

Re the nurse, maybe it's to see the home environment and to give tips on helping asthma, like carpets, pets, ect?

Lones80 · 10/10/2014 09:06

DS is nearly 3. With the preventer we count down from ten and then do a "blast off" around the room. At first we would swing him around, but now he races round on his own.

Badvoc123 · 11/10/2014 22:59

Soooo....
Had to pick ds1 up from school on Thursday as he felt very sick (looked very pale too)
He is still coughing :(
Should I take him back to gp on Monday?
Last week his sats were 97 and she said his chest was clear but he is needing double preventer and ventolin too ATM...

Badvoc123 · 11/10/2014 22:59

(And he has had 3 days of pred)

Sirzy · 11/10/2014 23:03

I would take him back to get checked. Hope he is better soon.

I tried to wean DS ventolin down last night/today (he currently has 5 puffs 3 times a day was trying for 3 puffs 3 times a day) what a nightmare that was - coughing by 11pm last night, and an asthma attack at 10am this morning so back to 5 puffs for now

Badvoc123 · 11/10/2014 23:06

Sorry to hear that sirzg.
I find GPS really rubbish with asthma if I'm honest :(
Sigh.
I will take him back.
He will miss another days school which he won't mind :)

Sirzy · 11/10/2014 23:11

Yes I have little faith in GPs either. Hope he is better soon x

OP posts:
Badvoc123 · 12/10/2014 03:15

Well, he now has a temp and a headache.
Got an ooh gp appt at 4.30am.
It's only 40 min drive away!
Oh joy.

Badvoc123 · 12/10/2014 05:19

What a waste of fucking time.
I'm going to the gp On Monday and request a chest x ray.
This is getting ridiculous.

lollipoppi · 12/10/2014 12:07

Badvoc sounds like you've had a long night, how's he doing today?
What did the docs say?

Badvoc123 · 12/10/2014 12:35

Said his chest was clear but his sats were 95 and his peak flow rubbish but dr said it was his technique?
Then as we left he said gp on Monday as it may be a sinus infection or he may need a chest x ray!!!

lollipoppi · 12/10/2014 13:34

So if it was a sinus infection and he had a raised temp why no antibiotics?? Fecking useless!

I hope you get some more answers tomorrow at your gps

Badvoc123 · 12/10/2014 13:50

No idea :(
Going to go to gp tomorrow and ask for abs, further investigations and/or a sick note for school.
Fed up now.

Badvoc123 · 12/10/2014 16:27

Can I ask what the normal peak flow should be for an 11 year old?
He is 151 cm tall.

lollipoppi · 13/10/2014 07:52

Good luck at GP today, I'm not sure with the peak flow my DS is too young for one yet

pumpkinsweetie · 13/10/2014 10:23

Hope you get some where with the Gp today badvoc.
I agree GPS are pretty useless with asthma, took them many years to get my mum's medication right, so much so she hasn't had a full blown attack for a long time!

I managed to get antibiotics for my dd more than a week ago, finally gp agreed she needed them. But when I asked to discuss asthma in babies, after running half an hour late the arsehole said he would be wasting minutes discussing it with me and to come back for a longer appointment! wouldn't even let me have another blue pump, even though I told him it is nearly ran outAngry

Takes me 30 mins to walk there and just as pants as my last surgery, thinking of moving back to previous surgery to save me the walk as they are all as bad as each other...

Badvoc123 · 13/10/2014 10:32

Well...no further on really :(
She said his chest is clear and that it's probably a sinus virus.
No abs.
Can see me going back next week tbh..sigh..

pumpkinsweetie · 13/10/2014 17:47

Hope he gets better soon badvoc always helps to get a second opinion if need be, mothers instinct and all that. Some gps are better than others, I'm starting to realise who the crap ones are at my surgery, think I'll go for locum next time as I find they are very thorough and seek to see what is actually wrong with the child !
