High temp since Sat afternoon- any bug going round that it could be?

Ds2 has had a very high temp since sat afternoon but it is coming down with calpol. It always shoots back up when it wears off though.

No other symptoms - any clue what it might be? He's 6 so keeping him off school and docs layer but just wondered that sort of bugs are going round at the moment.

DS's two friends who we normally lift share with for the school run are both off sick this morning. Both have apparently had high temps and flu like symptoms over the weekend.

HousewifefromBethlehem · 17/12/2012 09:07

Yes my son was off for two days last week with temp, shivers, cough etc.

It is nasty, those were the only days off he's had in two years!

butisthismyname · 17/12/2012 09:12

Yes, this sounds very much like what dd had over the weekend. Just hot and a bit quiet with a slight cough. She kept rallying then flopping - all a bit odd, but seems fine now - although the cough is still there a little.

NickNacks · 17/12/2012 09:25

This sounds like the same thing. I've got him an appt because it has become apparent in the last couple of years that all three dc have a high pain threshold must get it from me not DH and last time he was like this he had tonsillitis so bad it spread to his mouth.

Yup, my two have had this, DD for 4 days last week and DS since wednesday. DS still not 'right' he had a temperature of 39.2 this morning but like the original poster said, calpol brings it down for a while and he seems brighter but is very lethargic, tired (slept 13 hours sat night), not much of an appetite, chills, achey. DS was off school thursday and friday and when I spoke to him this morning (he's almost 6) he said he would go to school and see how he goes.
I've been waiting for the phone to ring all morning, telling me to come get him. Got docs this afternoon.
He had really bad EBV virus and strep throat in Jan this year to the extent he was hopitalised and the docs incorrectly diagnosed lymphoma so extremley paranoid and have little faith in doctors Sad

bunjies · 17/12/2012 11:15

Yep dd2 has this since yesterday. Temp of 101.5 and no other symptoms. She's off today but is desperate to go in tomorrow as it's her class party.

EightToSixer · 17/12/2012 11:35

Took DS to out of hours last night with this, dr said its real flu and needs carpool and ibuprofen alternately every two hours to keep temp below 40 degrees. He's completely lethargic, won't eat, has a rash and is very poorly. Last time he was thisill was two years ago with swine flu. Poor boy. Hope all your DCs get better quickly.

Northernlurker · 17/12/2012 13:00

Ahhhh - my dd is at home today with high temp and slight cough. Looks very sorry for herself.

PartridgeInARustyBearTree · 17/12/2012 13:07

We have about a dozen kids off our school today with this, (plus another 3 with vomiting), it's been going for a few weeks now- apparently, sometimes it develops into a cough/chest infection, sometimes it's just high temp and headache. Nobody seems to have put a name to it yet though.

NickNacks · 17/12/2012 13:08

Back from doc- its 'just' a virus and he's a bit dehydrated. She just said to make sure he drinks enough to keep his urine clear. She did a dip stick on his wee to rule out uti and it was very dark.

Keep on top of the calpol/nurofen.

This one seems to be hitting the slightly older children and babies and toddlers seem ok at the minute. We saw several classmates at the doctors!

Hope they are all better soon.

Wow! so much of it about :( hope everyone manages to get their dc well for xmas! It's dd's birthday on xmas eve and we have four 'do's this week, including her party on Thurs and pantomime on sunday so am crossing my fingers that she doesn't relapse again!

ladydepp · 17/12/2012 14:37

This hit my 3 dc's last week. One was only off school for 2 days, the other 2 were off for a whole week. They have never had a whole week off between them in a whole year! They are all still sleeping more than usual and have MUCH less energy than normal. At least they're all eating again, they went right off their food for a while.

Our main symptoms were headache, fever, lethargy, shivery one hour and then too hot an hour later. A few days later a painful cough and sore throat. Dd who is 5 still has nasty night time cough.

Hope your dc's are all better soon, it is a nasty bug!

(ps - I got it from them and am still not feeling great almost a week later so rest up!)

butisthismyname · 17/12/2012 17:32

Got home from work to find her fast asleep in bed. She apparentely was ok at school but just came home and flopped out again! On the sofa now, not brilliant, coughing and not hungry...GAH!!! I just wonder what it actually is

Shakey1500 · 17/12/2012 17:36

Another one here Sad

Ds (5) has had high temp since Sat, no appetite and extremely tired which is not like him at all. He's alseep on the sofa next to me now. Drinking but not a lot, but weeing. Kept him off school today (he missed the panto visit) and looks like he'll be off tomorrow.

Glad it's not just me!

NickNacks · 17/12/2012 18:53

My two dc have had variations of this. It's horrible. DD (4) had it for 5 days started getting better then got a bacterial infection in her ear. So is now on penicillin and thankfully on mend. Initially she was horizontal on sofa, weak and spiking temperatures around 39 degrees. Calpol/neurofen stopped working & temp hitting 40 on Saturday so I got her to put of hours doc for antibiotics. Shes now jumping around again but was pale, flushed and a bit unresponsive - scary.

My DS (5) is now off school with a version of. Horizontal on sofa, spiking temperature high 39's. Cough, Headache, hot and cold, v tired. Poor thing. Am hoping he gets better soon.

I've recently had gastric flu. Horrendous. Now getting DS cough. This has been v sickly winter so far. Am hoping your little ones get well soon. x

butisthismyname · 19/12/2012 20:41

And now I appear to have it :( sneezing, sore throat, headache, knackered. Bugger.

Shakey1500 · 19/12/2012 20:47

Me too but Sad

DS now staying off all week. It's been like a "sleeping" virus with him. I've never known him sleep so much.

butisthismyname · 19/12/2012 20:49

dd going back to school tomorrow - her birthday party is after school and she seems an awful lot better - agree re: the sleeping too!

HollyDayzacummin · 20/12/2012 14:59

Thank God. That's reassuring. DD, nearly 12 years old, is off today...bad temp, started off saying she had a bit of a sore throat and felt sick, but then kept saying she just feel 'yukky and not right'. Very upset, in some distress at times, but has stopped over-acting crying and moaning 'why me', 'mummy make it stop' and 'make it go away!' so I've put the oscar away. I know that sounds heartless, and I feel really sorry for her, but she is ill so infrequently that she doesn't have a pain threshold at all. I am sure she'll be great tomorrow as she tends to be a 24 hour bug sufferer.

DIWhy · 20/12/2012 16:20

My DD's been ill since Friday night - high temp, sore throat, earache, no appetite, tummy ache, aching legs, really bad cough. Doc thought it was the flu. Touch wood she seems to be a lot better today, but I'm suddenly feeling really rough, bet I've caught it off her. Headache & feeling tired & woozy. I just don't want the other DC to get it

ChristmasJubilee · 20/12/2012 19:58

We have all had the same thing. Dh and ds2 were really quite unwell. I was actually vomiting but no one else has.

HollyDayzacummin · 23/12/2012 13:36

3rd day in and dd is still suffering. Sincerely hope everyone is better by Christmas Day.

EightToSixer · 24/12/2012 06:08

DS is now better after 8 days. His temp was over 39-40 for 7 of those, but when the virus left it just upped and went overnight, he went from waking every 20 minutes overnight to sleeping 8 hours and woke up announcing he was better. He's eating again now. Still on the strong antibiotics for his chest but much much better. Flu is a horrible thing, much much worse than the 24 hour sickness bug he ad 3 weeks ago. He's lost soooo much weight and was skinny to start with, so Christmas is a old time to build him up again I guess :)
Hope all your DCs get much better soon
