Not a virus, so what?

On Friday evening at about 7pm my 15 month old was really violently sick. A couple of hours later the same thing happened. On Saturday she seemed fine; not much of an appetite but well in herself.

Yesterday again she seemed fine. She hadn't eaten a huge amount since Friday so I wanted her to have a supper she loves, so she got spaghetti hoops and grated cheese on toast (the shame). She went to bed at 7 as usual but at about nine started crying inconsolably, I was in bed reading, so brought her in with me and she went back to sleep. About 30 mins later I noticed her gagging and then again, really violently sick everywhere. Then she went back to sleep, and no more sick.

What is this?? Surely if it were a virus, she wouldn't have been fine all day on Saturday? Should I keep her home?

She only had a tiny poo on Saturday but made up for it in spectacular fashion yesterday, could it be a bug? The 24hr recovery confuses me.

any nasty bug will usually enter the body through the mouth and make its way down the gastro-intestinal tract, so the vomiting on Friday was maybe the stomach trying to get rid of the bug, and then as it made its way down into the intenstines, the diarrhea was another way of trying to rid the body of the virus/bacteria etc.

She may have just been sick again because of the spasms in her tummy/gut.

If you are worried, I would take her to the docs tomorrow, just to be sure.

make sure she doesn't get dehydrated - it can happen very quickly, and babies can go downhill fast if that happens.

also, if she's got a sensitive tum, its probably not the best idea to give tomato based things (too acidic) or dairy (hard to digest)

may try plain toast - the BRAT diet is banana, rice, apple sauce, toast

Sounds like a bug doing the rounds
My 2 have both had it - exactly as you describe, sick then fine , sick then fine then start the other end, then fine, then sick again
DS 's lasted Sunday- Friday
DD's Wednesday- Saturday
One poor boy at DS's school had it for 2 weeks

One more thing - should I not give her milk? She's really hungry, has eaten a banana but seemed unimpressed!

I would water the milk down a bit, try simple things like toast, rice, pasta and then slowly increase as the stomach turns bak to normal. Try not to give large quantities either.

She's just shared some toast with me and the dog, now dancing on the coffee table watching Mr Tumble..
