6 month old having a bad cough

I am a first time mommy and that is my DS first cold (which makes me seriuosly nervous). He seems to have runny nose and a chesty cough, which has been getting worse the last couple of hours. I brought him to GP yesterday- basic cold. No other medicine apart Calpol has been recommended. But he is so miserable- if not sleeping, then crying as his throat is probably really sore...

The question I wanted to ask how could I help my little boy (before he wakes his twin sister up)?

TIA

A lot of babies are going down with Bronchiolitis at the moment

My 5 month old is just coming out of it

Could you get a second opinion?

Sorry to hear you've got a poorly one. Horrible with babies. Hate our DD being ill, and she's 3. Have u put Vicks on his chest, back and feet? Also, a humidifier (or bowl of water in room) seems to help coughs and breathing in general. Good luck for the night ahead. Oh, also, propping cot up at head end.

McPhee, sorry to hear your LO is sick as well.

Actually GP said his lungs are clear and it should be nose mucus that irritates his throat. I dont think I have wicks, so I'll try at least bowl of water.

He becomes hysterical placed in the cot. Proping him up doesn't work- he sleeps on his tummy (can't stop him rolling) and keeps sliding down... I put him in car seat while I was feeding DD and he fell asleep there. Don't even dare moving him...

Poor little lad, and poor you. Our DD used to do the hysterical thing when poorly as well. She hated it, and fought it like a wild animal, and we became really nervous about her catching colds. She's just come down with one today. Thankfully she now understands that like the other colds she's had, it will go away. Hope his sleep on the car seat makes him a bit calmer so that you can put him down in cot without him fighting it.

2mummies- thank you! I think he feels a bit better in car seat as his breathing is clearer.
I just hope DD doesn't catch it as well. Any chance she might get away with it? Doctor put it as if there is no point in trying to separate their toys and keeping them away from each other as she'll catch it anyway... Not really encouraging...
