20 month old is always getting thrush

My little girl is always getting thrush. She can be fine in the morning and by the afternoon be absolutely raw. She doesn't have anything in her bath and now wears knickers (no tights or trousers), so thought it would have stopped re-occurring.

What else can I do and how much often can I use Canesten on her. I seem to be almost constantly using it.

Maybe see your GP about the oral tablet for her?

I doubt she'd manage to take a tablet at 20 months! She ought to see a gp though, to rule out systemic illness increasing risk of thrush eg diabetes.

GP has just told me to not put bubbles in her bath and wash her bottom with water not wet wipes.

Will check out symptoms of diabetes though because she does wee a LOT. Although I put this down to how much she drinks, this can also be a sign of diabetes.

Well, a tablet or oral solution. Obviously.

Nurse checked her urine today, to rule out Diabetes. All clear. Dr says just keep on using Canesten if it helps and hopefully she will grow out of it. Didn't feel this was a very satisfactory answer, but Dr says that he can't do anything else.

Nurse also did a swab to check it is actually thrush, but then said afterwards that they are often inconclusive. Prob not worth putting my daughter through then really.

That's frustrating. Can you get a second opinion, either another gp or a paediatrician.

Can you try giving her lots of natural yoghurt, on a daily basis for a start, its very good for thrush.

I'd ask for a referral to a relevant paediatrician.

Have started running her bath over a bag of oats, which softens the water and helps with skin conditions. Also feeding her as much natural yogurt as I can get her to eat.

Still not 100% that it is thrush as no discharge (sorry tmi I know) and might just be sensitive skin.

If no improvement in a couple of weeks I will make an appointment to see a differrent doctor and keep doing so until I get some proper answers.

OMG how rubbish your GP is go back and demand something different. My daughter is two and a half and she's been back and forth with both Oral Thrush and vaginal thrush for the past couple of months.

She started with thrush downbelow and the GP prescribed Cannisten, didn't work, went back and I got Hydracortizone (not sure on spelling) and that didn't work. Finally got Nystafen cream which is an antibiotic cream and that cleared it up overnight. She was in such distress by this point as it was 3 weeks we'd been having it. She's been out of nappies since she was 18 months and the Dr was very surprised that she gets it, we don't use strong soaps or bubbles as I've got eczema so very sensitive about what I put the kids in bath wise.

I'm now on the second oral thrush treatment in 2 weeks. Dr was brillient both times prescribing Nystatin (oral version) for thrush in her mouth. It's taken a while to clear up but she's much more comfortable.

I purposfully came on Mumsnet to see if anybody elses little girl suffers and they obviously do but at least we got some good treatment.

Hope this helps and don't put up with GP saying there's nothing that can be done there is loads they can try. Admittedly the Chemist did have to specially order the cream, but it was there the same day.

Will make a GP appointment again and ask for Nystafen cream. Sometimes our doctors will just write you a prescription if you request it, so worth trying.
