Would calpol bring temp down if it's UTI?

DD has had a temp this evening. was about 38 at 6pm then up to 39 at bedtime. She has been acting as normal although she has a bit of a cold (just snotty no cough) but that's been for a few days.

She said it hurt a bit when she wees earlier(she is 3) so was wondering if it could be UTI. Also I thought she smelt a bit fishy when she went to the loo yestersay (thrush?).

However after giving calpol temp is down to 37.6 - if it was UTI would it have come down?

Yes, paracetamol is extremely good at controlling temperature.

Hmm it's just that I've been told more than once by NHS direct that if DCs had chest infection the temp wouldn't come down with paracetamol

So if it is UTI can it wait til the morning to see OOH?

Well that's just crap advice from NHS direct! Having seen how quickly UTIs can develop and become nasty and very distressing I wouldn't leave it.

Shit so do I wake her up and get OOH appt? She is fast asleep and was happy as larry all day/evening even with temp of 39..

DD has had a UTI before (& been admitted to hospital with a temp of 41.4). Paracetamol will bring temperature down but we and the hospital found that child ibrufen was always far better at bringing the temperature down - we interspaced the 2 as they don't react with one another. NHS direct told us not to do this but hospital/GP's have always done it.

If you can can you get a sterile container and a wee sample to take to the doctors for them to send away for cultures? We keep a sample bottle upstairs just in case after the first UTI! Though I'd imagine you could use a glass container or something if it was sterilised.

If she's sleeping, I.would let her sleep and see.how she is in the morning and.speak to OOH GP.tomorrow.morning.

In my (non-medical/non-professional/anectodl) experience.

Calpol will bring down temp with a UTI, but it will soon spike again when the parecetmol wears off.

I would go to out of hours.

I hate scaremongering - but I left 19mo DS2 for 24hrs with a high temp. He ended up spending 7 days in hospital with a sever kidney infection on IV antibiotics.

I used to be a 'don't want to be a neurotic doctor-worrying mother' before that.

It's more than likely just a cold - but for your peace of mind, I think you should at least ring the OOH GP

How do I sterilise a container ? Boil it in a saucepan for how long?

Oh Cat your poor DS, that's a bit scary. I really don't think it's the cold because she's had it a few days and temp just came on this evening

Our DD was under 2 as well, apparently if under 2 UTI's are more likely to cause kidney infections as well - DD had to have a kidney scan afterwards which was ok.

As she's 3 I'd probably give her ibrufen if/when she wakes and try and get a wee sample. That or maybe call OOH and tell them you think she might have a UTI what do they recommend?

Recent experience with high temp 40.2 + a&e said very high temps which are only v temporarily bought down with calpol are normally due to throat or UTI. DD subsequently developed a chest infection and tonsillitis so they were right.
Hope it's just a cold but worth getting her checked out.

It doesn't matter - whatever you do they will discard it.

They gave me a pad to put in DS2's nappy. When he weeed on it they said it was inaccurate due to possible contamination from faeces.

They will want you in the hospital catching the urine in one of their sterile tubes

Boil a pot for 10min, good luck catching a wee, it took us over and hour in the waiting room, many tears!

UTIs are far more treatable than kidney infections.

Trust your instincts - it could be easily treatable with some oral antibiotics. A quick trip to the OOH GP or A and E is nothing in the grand scheme x

Oh and for wee catching - hands and feet in a washing up bowl of warm water

I think that chemists might be able to give you sample bottles? If you have one near you you might be able to phone them and find out. Otherwise it's boiling a jam jar for a few mins?

Nice tip cat! Will see if I can get hold of OOH or should i try NHS direct first?

At least if she's toilet trained it might be easier getting the sample - trying to get a sample from and 18 month old unpotty trained child took hours (& multiple misses with me taking my eyes off her at the critical moment!)

I think from my experience Nhs direct will tell you to go to OOh or A&e (as they did to us last week when DD was vomiting blood!)

OMG my DH can be such an arsehole he made out I was mad thinking of "waking her up in the middle of the night and taking her to a&e".

Ring NHS direct - but I bet you my last dollar they will tell you to go to A and E

rang NHS direct got a message saying they were only taking emergency calls & they were very very busy. So I did the online symptom checker instead which said I should phone GP or if surgery was closed, OOH.

Just been on the phone to OOH who said she needs to be seen & am waiting for reception to call me back with appt time . OOH is at the hospital & parking is shocking, not sure whether to get a taxi instead

Can DH take you? Or have you got other DCs? X

Surely it won't be so shocking out of visiting hours and with none of the day-time office staff there though. Hope all is well.
