winter vomiting bug G.P just gave paracetamol!!!

my poor DD (2 1/2 year old) has been been vomiting non stop since morning. just took her to G.P & he put it down to a virus & has given paracetamol...

I'm not a big believer in giving kids antibiotics but surely knowing there is a winter vomiting bug going round he could have given her anti biotics!!! she is not eating/drinking anything.... I'm getting really worried :(

anyone got any tips on how to make her drink something....

Antibiotics are for infections not viruses. Paracetamol will keep her temperature down and help any tummy ache she may have.

You took a vomiting child to the doctors, knowing she has a very contagious bug that she would pass on to the entire surgery?

It is a virus. Antibiotics is not going to work with a virus. If anything, could give her diarrhea and upset her stomach even more.

Doctors dont give antibiotics willy nilly, they cant, there are guidelines.

As bruffin said, antibiotics will not treat a viral infection, only a bacterial one. Keep her comfortable, encourage her to take small sips of a drink she likes.

but if it's a virus antibiotics won't do anything...

Let her rest and take it easy. A day with less food won't hurt her in the long run, and if she still has the bug it's best that her tummy is empty. Her body is sending her the right signals.

Little sips of water often are best. Can you get some diaoralite (spelling?) or other similar drink from the chemists that she can sip? (can someone else get out and fetch it for you, as not only is it not easy going out with a sick kid but you want to reduce the chances of infecting others if you can)

The winter vomiting bug is a virus and as bruffin says antibiotics ARE NOT for viruses.

I know it seems useless, I took my own DD after 9 days of vomiting recently, but paracetamol is the only thing that might help. There is no drug to stop vomiting suitable for under 16's.

Antibiotics would be a complete waste of time and tbh if she only started being sick this morning I think taking her to the dr was an over reaction

Try giving her an ice lolly. Not an ice cream but the kind that is clear iyswim. It may get some fluid inside. I was also told by my gp that flat lemonade is good. Hope she feels better soon.

Surprised the GP didn't give you rehydration drink advice, but apart from that, yes antibiotics are no use. I have contacted the GP once about a vomiting bug and that was over the phone so we didn't infect everyone and was purely to discuss at what point I needed to think about hospital for intravenous rehydration (no liquids had been kept down for 12 hours and was getting worried).

These things are the body getting rid of something that's bad for it and just need to be ridden out.

Been stuck at home with me and dd1 both sick since Saturday.
All you can do is get in the water, paracetamol if temp. Also recommend ice pops, dry biscuits and pj days

A couple of hours of vomitting and you went to the Gp expecting antibiotics?

Small amounts of water regulary and lots of cuddles is all she needs.

I'm surprised the GP didn't give you short shrift for taking a child with a contagious virus in to see him after being ill for a few hours.

By all means be cautious with small children but that's ridiculous.

Don't pay for the rehydration stuff. Mix a pinch of salt, a tablespoon of sugar, a litre of water and a good shot of juice or squash. Same thing.

You'd have got sod all and a blocking had you done that at my doctors. Rightly so IMO !

sorry DRSeuss she shoudln't be adding a pinch of anything. She need to look up proper proportions online.

After a couple of hours I doubt there is a need for any sort of rehydration fluid anyway. Plain old water will be fine!

wow u guys really know how to put down someone who is already feeling out of sorts with a sick child.... the last time my child did this she chocked on her vomit, went blue/purple in the face & had to be taken to hospital via ambulance as she stopped breathing.... so I'm sorry if me being concerned seems over the top to u all

I didn't just take her to the Dr Willy nilly I rang NHS Direct first & followed their advise... I then contacted the G.P when they opened by phone & was told to bring her along to the surgery. I told the G.P she has been vomiting since 6 am so he was well aware of that fact!!!

thanku to those who suggested the rehydration... I do infact have dioralyte at home & have tried to get her to drink this but of course in her state she simply won't
