Help, DD2 10.5 months to go milk & dairy free

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 13/11/2012 17:33

I've got some LF milk from GP.

What products can I find as a substitute for yoghurts, butter, cheese, bread etc. it's all a bit overwhelming what I will need to change.

Thanks

I make rice pudding with DS3's Nutramigen. It's what's for pudding tonight!

Pure sunflower spread and Vitalite are good substitutes for sandwiches, but I find Block Stork far superior for baking. Has to be the BLOCK Stork though, the one in the gold wrapper.

Try 1oz Nutramigen, 7oz SMA.

Then drop an ounce of SMA for Nutramigen every other day. That's how I got DS3 to take it. And now he guzzles it! He's been on it for 9 months, since I stopped bf at 12mo.

Thanks ladies will try that.

I'll buy some gold block stork too as I do a lot of baking.

I'm still learning what she can & cannot have, so all advice and info is gratefully received Smile

She seems happier in herself. Need to get some Movicol into her to really clear her out and see from there but she has been going to toilet without screaming so that's an improvement Smile

Movicol in such a young baby? Would a dab of prune juice in her porridge not do the same thing? I didn't even need to do that much with DS3 - around a week after he was on full Nutramigen, it, erm, sorted itself out quite violently and ruining a lovely outfit...

Couthy DD2 had been on just Nutramigen since yesterday so only time will tell.

Re Movicol, I have that & big bottle of lactulose to help her poo. Sad wish she could do it on her own without any pain.

It does happen, her gut just needs to heal first. DS3 is now 22 months (today) and he has no trouble at all with pooing. Hang in there, it does get better!

Today I am practicing icing some Organix Goodies mini gingerbread men to look like snowmen, Santa's and reindeer so that I know I can put some Christmas treats in his stocking.

I find that a lot of the baby snacks are dairy/soy/nut free, so he still has a lot of those.

Organix rice cakes, Organix crisps in the orange, pink and red bags are OK (NOT the green or yellow bags). Also the Organix Goodies cereal bars are mostly dairy free - there is even a chocolate flavour one that is made purely with cocoa and is dairy free, but Tesco doesn't stock it.

A lot of Kiddylicious toddler snacks are dairy/soy/nut free too. The fruit crisps and the smoothie melts are, anyway.

I've even found dairy/soy/nut free popcorn - the POPZ brand in sweet that you do in the microwave. (We have family film night and he kept trying to nick popcorn so I now do this one).

There's lots of alternatives.

I find the tinned mandarins that DS3 eats helps to keep him regular. He has a small pot most days with his breakfast as he is also allergic to a lot of fruit, and this is one that he can safely eat.

Thanks for all that info. DH is writing a shopping list so will add those things on. Would you just keep her on milk for a few days and start food again once she's had a good clear out or what? I'm not sure tbh.

At 10/11mo, I'd reintroduce foods slowly so that you can see if age is reacting to anything else. With CMP issues, I would be careful with bread because all shop bought bread has soya in.

When my DS3 first went dairy free, I was using soya replacements. He ended up developing an allergy to soya too, like 80% of people with CMP allergy.

Simple, one ingredient foods to start with, or food that you have made yourself and know exactly what is in it, and build up gradually over the next week or two until she is back on a full diet.

Under a year this isn't so difficult - think of the mantra "Food is for fun until they are one."

The majority of her nutrition will be coming from the Nutramigen still. How many ounces does she have in a day? I know for a 20mo, 30oz a day provides all the vitamins and minerals that they need.

I didn't get to see a dietician until then though, so I'm not 100% sure for a younger DC. I think I remember from the chart that it was about the same though.

That also includes any Nutramigen that you mix into cereal etc.

Be careful with baby food and ALL porridge - almost ALL contain milk protein or soya. The only two I've found that don't are Cow & Gate 'Sunny Start' banana porridge and Cow & Gate 'Sunny Start' fruity crunch cereal'.

All adult brands contain either milk protein, soya lecithin or both.

If you get stuck on food suggestions, feel free to PM me and I'm happy to help.

Thank you so much, as its all baffling and seeing her in pain to go to toilet is heartbreaking! Constipation is the worst thing bless her.

I will do that. Give her a couple of days of Nutramigen then start to re introduce food.

The Organix yellow/green cheese & herbs, DD2 loves so have they got milk & the protein in? Shame if they do as they are her favs. I know AK baby foods are dairy-free.

I haven't tried her on soya based products yet. Need to get some yoghurts tho.

Be warned though - baby porridge is rank and bitter when mixed just with Nutramigen. To get DS3 to eat it, I mix it up half with Nutramigen and half with the juice from a Tesco goodness pot of mandarins, and I break up the mandarins into the porridge. Makes it slightly more palatable!

Yep, the green ones have milk protein in, I'm afraid. DS3 preferred the orange carrot ones until he got a bit bigger, I guess as he never had the green ones!

I do think the flavour on the pink pack and the red pack is quite strong for a little one, but they are DS3's faves now. He likes the pink ones best because he can put them on his fingers like rings and eat them like that. Hmm
