Help, DD2 10.5 months to go milk & dairy free

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 13/11/2012 17:33

I've got some LF milk from GP.

What products can I find as a substitute for yoghurts, butter, cheese, bread etc. it's all a bit overwhelming what I will need to change.

Thanks

Thank you. HV def thinks it is both the lactose & protein so will have to avoid soya too then or try in small doses. so much to take in. Thank you Smile

What are her symptoms when she has dairy? Are they thinking allergy or intolerance? If it's allergy, they should be able to test and let you know definitively re soya.

My tiwns are allergic to CMP (cows milk protein) and eggs but are fine with soya.

Hi, bad tummy ache and really really constipated if has too much milk & dairy. it has been monitored for a while as she has been like it since birth and we've changed several things before. Will be getting a referral to a dietician too to go thru & confirm all the ins and outs. So in meantime I have to cut everything out. she gets so poorly, hard to see my baby screaming in pain Sad

DD2 has been put on nutramigen AA milk and referred to a dietician. So will see what happens hopefully will make a difference in her tummy & bowel habits and not make her so constipated. My poor baby Sad

From what I've heard nutramigen is one of the worst tasting milks so be prepared to do some mixing in with old milk to get her to take it. It hey r also vile cold so may well have to
Be heated more than usual in order for her to accept the new milk. Dd2 had aptamil pepti which was one of the more palatable. U may well be lucky and she takes straight away. On plus side these milks are amazing and the difference in the baby is instant all though the pooing may well take a bit of time to regulate itself but she will feel better instantly :)

Once they get to a year there r other options. Like babies van move info cows milk they can also move into the alternatives. Although u will be able to get the prescription for awhile yet, :)

Oh and here's to a happier little girl. It really is amazing how good these milks r :)

Thanks Wheresmycaffeinedrip I hope in a couple of weeks her tummy & bowel problems will have got better and she will be able to go to the toilet without needing lactulose to go and it being a softer stool for her. Looking at info for all the Nutramigen milks AA is the best one, doesn't smell foul and seems to be a lot more drinkable.

How would I mix if she doesn't take it on its own?

Just do half old milk and half new milk and gradually increase quantities. I would say however that as she's older u could probably just get away with offering it her all day until she takes it as u can just flood her food with it until she does. And if she's been fed solids before hand she won't be starving so u should have time for her to put it down and go back to it for a bit without her being hysterical if that makes sense. How many bottles a day does she have, it's most likely going to be the night time one that will upset her as it will be different so perhaps give he a cup/ small bottle in the day time first to see how u go. Ya never know she might just take straight to it x

It varies tbh she has 3 meals a day and anywhere between 1-3 bottles. Just depends how much solid food she has iykwim.

Thanks your advice really is great and helping me a whole lot. Smile

No problem :) well as soon as u get the milk try her on a little bottle of it and see how she reacts. Some quite happily chop and change . Dd2 was happy straight away but was much younger. The problem cane when dr gave us am alternative which she hated but as I had run out I had no choice but to just give it. Took two days and she caved. I just put extra oatly on her porridge and made white sauces so she was taking something at least .
Your dd may well be a little wary of milk as she feels so horrid after but once she realizes this ones ok I'm sure she will be fine. Let us know how u get on :)

Hope it makes a difference for her and you, just out of interest, what bread is she getting? I didn't realise you could get dairy free bread on prescription!!!

Only reason I know is because I work in a doctors practice and deal with a lot of prescriptions every day.

Well she refuses to drink the Nutramigen. I made an 8oz bottle - 6oz SMA LF & 2oz Nutramigen and refuses to drink it. Made an 8oz SMA LF bottle and she's happily drinking it. What do I do?

Try reducing the nutramigen by another half oz. make sure it's really warm. Sounds like it could take a little while . U could try making up a cup containing an oz and just leave it for her to take when she pleases ( obviously no more than the hour stated on how long a made up formula last out the fridge)

I will probably also get flamed for this but if she really won't take it I would speak to dr Monday as she's what 5 maybe six weeks of a yr. he may well say its ok to put her straight onto a shop bought milk like the Kara ( perhaps with addition of vitamin drops if he deems needed) how is she with the Kara on cereal?

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 17/11/2012 15:32

Fine with Kara. She loved it. HV gave me a name of vitamins I need to get.

Going to see if SMA LF will be fine until we can stop her on formula & switch to Kara.
