Help, DD2 10.5 months to go milk & dairy free

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 13/11/2012 17:33

I've got some LF milk from GP.

What products can I find as a substitute for yoghurts, butter, cheese, bread etc. it's all a bit overwhelming what I will need to change.

Thanks

ooo yep i'll be making a trifle for xmas too. We are round my parents on xmas day so will be making a small dairy & soya free trifle for DD2.

Jus-Rol is only a £1 in Asda at the moment so been buying from there.

Robinsons classic mincemeat is dairy & soya free so I made some mince pies on tuesday with DD1 and they went down a treat too.

I can't make pastry either! Tesco pastry is cheaper than Jus-Rol.

Thanks for the info on custard - I can make trifle now for Christmas!

Strawberry jelly, Tesco savoir fingers are dairy/soy free, birds custard and Whipped Oatly cream!!

We have trifle. Grin

Ok thanks.

I can't make pastry so buy Jus-Roll stuff. Need to bake some cakes tho.

No, it's got buttermilk in, I knew there was a reason I couldn't use it!

I'm not sure tbh, but it's not as good for baking or pastry. I'll check the ingredients.

Now my sister bless her heart brought me a tub of stork instead of the gold block. Is the tub of stork no good?

Birds custard powder is soya free too. Have to buy the tub tho & not the sachets as they have milk in.

Haven't tried DD2 on chocolate milk yet. Will buy some of that too.

I try and get as much fluid into her to try and help with digestion & bowel movements but to no avail yet.

I have some C&G sunny start porridge here so that's a good start Smile

32 loaves! Grin bread pudding made with Block Stork?!

She's been given Genius white bread and I've found it okay to spread & toast and she eats it fine. Doc put on script 4 loaves. The pharmacy mis-ordered and I had 4 boxes of 8 loaves so had 32 loaves to deal with!

I haven't attempted custard yet, but have read on another thread that Bird's custard powder is dairy free, so am going to check that it is soy free too and if so, try it for him.

DS3 doesn't like the 'grainy' texture of Karo, but he is fine with Oatly, so I use a lot of it!

The chocolate flavour one is nice warmed through as a hot chocolate, but I tend to mix it half and half with the plain one as it is quite dark as it is made 'chocolatey' with cocoa powder.

CouthyMowEatingBraiiiiinz · 24/11/2012 10:20

No, only the Cow & Gate ones because the others have milk protein or soya in (DS3 has a allergy with soy which developed AFTER his allergy to CMP)

DON'T use Ready Brek - that one in particular has milk powder in it, caused a massive reaction in DS3 before I realised!

I've got some Oatley single cream & Kara coconut milk - which I mix in with her cereal. Haven't made rice pudding with either of those 2 milks yet and she loves rice pudding. Made custard with the Kara milk and she polished a huge bowl of that off Smile

You're lucky! We don't get the bread on prescription here, it costs me £17 a week now as 10yo DS1 has to eat it too as he is GF due to being coeliac.

What brand have you been prescribed? After 5 years of trying every brand on the market, I can safely say that Warburton's Gluten free & Wheat free is the best, and is also dairy & soy free too.

All the others crumble into dust the minute you try to spread anything on them, and as for toasting them, HA! They crumble as you try to get them out of the toaster. Genius is particularly bad for that!

Brilliant. I'm sure DD2 would do that with hoops on her fingers Grin

DD1 goes thru a lot of tinned fruit so will just buy extra for DD2.

Which porridge so you use - ready brek?

Tbh I manage well without the soya replacements, as I make rice pudding with Oatly for DS3. That is a decent pudding.

Or lightly whipped Oatly cream with a fruit purée sachet from the baby aisle makes a good yoghurt replacement.

Yep, the green ones have milk protein in, I'm afraid. DS3 preferred the orange carrot ones until he got a bit bigger, I guess as he never had the green ones!

I do think the flavour on the pink pack and the red pack is quite strong for a little one, but they are DS3's faves now. He likes the pink ones best because he can put them on his fingers like rings and eat them like that. Hmm

Be warned though - baby porridge is rank and bitter when mixed just with Nutramigen. To get DS3 to eat it, I mix it up half with Nutramigen and half with the juice from a Tesco goodness pot of mandarins, and I break up the mandarins into the porridge. Makes it slightly more palatable!
