Really worried, high temp with no symptoms

Hi,
Basically two year old daughter has had a cold all week. Yesterday her temp was up and down al day and when it hit 39.5 I panicked and took her to a and e. have put it down to a urine infection because they couldn't find anything else. Gave us anti bs, but only to take them if the temp spiked which it did at 4 am. Phones out of hours who said if temp was managed that's fine and get sample to the gp tomorrow. She seemed perky today until her temp rises then I dose her up some more. I'm terrified its septicaemia or something. She seems to be breathing fast but I've counted and its seems within normal range. Can someone offer some advice please?

It's obviously worrying, but a temp is the body's way of fighting off an infection, so her body is probably doing what it should do
Tbh I think it's a bit off of the hospital to give you antibiotics without finding the infection
If calpol is bringing the temp down it's ok
If medication isn't bringing it down, that's when you need to worry

Well she doesn't sound too bad to me tbh BUT if you're worried get her seen. Ds had similar symptoms and no obvious cause and it was pneumonia BUT the fever wasn't being controlled at all (40 with al and nurofen) and he was delirious.

Thanks, I should have explained we sat for an hour trying to get a sample and she wasn't performing. We then had a long journey home as we were away so they were just being cautious. I panic very easily. Her temp comes down with calpol and particularly ibuprofen but having to stick to the maximum doses.

I would say as long as the temp is being kept controlled then follow the advice of the OOH and get a sample to the Gp in the morning

If it's coming down with medication then I wouldn't worry.

Dd2 used to do a strange thing that if her temperature hit about 38.5 it would zoom up-hit 41 more than once. It then would only slightly reduce (about 39.5-40) with medication, but wouold need maximum calpol/ibroprofin for about 3 days before the temperature would come down to normal.
It meant if she started a temperature I'd act fast to keep it down.

She was standardly less ill with those temperatures than ds has been with temperatures of just over 38 on several occasions.

A temperature in itself is not necessarily a concern as it shows the body is fighting off infection.

How does your DD seem in herself? If she is very lethargic and sleepy even with Calpol then you need to seek medical attention again sooner rather than later. If she is vomiting this can also be a warning sign of more serious issues as can cold hands and feet despite a fever. Trust your instinct and if you are worried then seek medical advice. The majority of times things will not be serious but for those tiny minority of serious situations time can be very important. Doctors don't always get it right - our DD was seen twice by doctors before I then had to rush her to A&E with septicaemia only hours after the second GP visit. Thankfully she is still with us but it took a lot of medical care to save her.

Thanks for advice. My DD is better today, temp down without meds but very quiet and cuddly. Hoping its coming to an end now.
