Experiences of hydrocele

DS will be 5 years in January. I noticed last week that his scrotum was a strange shape - a bit elongated - and then had a closer look and was concerned as it was swollen and one testicle was huge. Seen the GP now and he has a hydrocele. The GP was going to send a referral - marked urgent - for an ultrasound and then an operation to drain it - more than likely just a day case op. Just wondering if anyone else's DS has had this, particularly at a similar age...? Any ideas what causes it to happen?? Also wondering how long we might be waiting for this referral to get through and for appointments to be made...? What was the drainage procedure and recovery like for you DS? MPD

My Ds had a hydrocele op at 2.5. It was very quick, he had it at the same time as laser treatment on his birthmark to avoid two GA's. It involved a small incision in his abdomen which was glued instead of stitches. It was so small he didn't even have a dressing. I gave him calpol for a couple of days but TBH I don't think he needed it. Full recovery and no scar last time I looked- he's 19 now so don't get close to that area at all Grin

Ds had the op at about 6yo - straightforward day case, a couple of days not running around too much and a couple of weeks not on his bike.

Fret not - it's an easy one.
