does this sound like worms/uti?

any advice gratefully received.

DD is 5 and last night - after opening her bowels - was crying alot in pain complaining of a hurting bottom/sore mini ( vaginal area). after calpol she fell asleep and woke again an hour later screaming - gave ibuprofen and a warm bath and she finally fell asleep a while later in my bed and could hear her whimpering through the night. However when she woke today she was fine. tonight though again we have the same - after opening her bowels - but greater pain this time. she doesnt describe it as itching , and is jerking forward so it does look like her mini is the problem, Ive had a look at the area and all looks ok , no redness or spots and i checked her poo and couldnt see any wigglers. She has been woken tonight 3 times due to the pain. Am def taking her to gp tomorrow regardless and will try and get a urine sample before then - just wondered if anyone has any ideas. THanks

Doesn't sound like worms, maybe cicitis (sp) or a uti.

Sample and doctors, colds he be constipated maybe?

My DD had something similar on and off until she was 10 or 11 and it just stopped. We never got to the bottom of it. It wasn't worms, or a urinary infection, or thrush. She would wake in the night in years complaining that her min hurt (not itching) and nothing we could do would make it better. She couldn't wee because it was too painful. Warm baths helped a little, and weeing in the water was easier. I even took her to A&E in the middle of the night once, because she was always better by the morning. It happened every 3 or 4 months. I tried to relate it to something she'd eaten or drunk, but never found out what it was, and as I said, just stopped.

Please let me know what he said. My DD is 15 and fine now - but I'd love to get to the bottom of it (ha ha!). The GP was baffled.

It always happened at night time, never in the day, and she used to really cry - was obviously in a lot of distress, but there was nothing to see, and no infection.

We realise one day that it hadn't happened for ages, and never happened again. I've spoken to her about it since, now that she's older. I thought she might be able to explain it more rationally. But she couldn't.

We gave her calpol, and cuddles. Calpol did help, but it used to just wear off apparently after about an hour of real hard crying. So weird.

no uti - said when she looked in her bottom that it was a bit red inside so may have a little tear caused by a large stool which is making it sore. No soreness around the vaginal area and she said she ( the gp) wouldnt poke around that area anyway.

Anyway it happened again that night- she was woken by the pain and said it was her mini - again no redness. A friend is a gp and she recommened timodeine,canesten or vaseline on the whole area to make the poos slip out with less pain. i put canasten on last night and all was fine - fingers crossed for tonight.

Maybe the gp is right but i find it very odd that it only hurts as night.

i do wnder if its an inflammed bladder

Sounds just the same as my DD.
in the end I assumed she 'd eaten or drunk something in the day that irritated her - an acidic fruit juice maybe. Calpol helped a bit.

This is exactly the same situ my daughter has been suffering with since she was three or four. Every few months, maybe as much as 4 apart and always at night, she has a crippling spasmic pain in her vaginal - i.e not constant but seeems to come in waves.
On three occasions I have taken her to A&E in the midst of the night, had urine test and gynaecologist look into her and cannot find any indication of what causes the condition.
On each occasion I have been sent off with a dose of kiddie nurofen and antihistamine and now always keep some handy for the attacks.
The only otherr factor I have noticed in my daughter was a small red blood filled blister on her inner labia, this blister is only blood filled at the time of her attacksn and clear any other time. The Dr suggested that this cld be due to friction if she is rubbing herself in aggravation... Over the past few years I have been at a complete loss and feel so helpess for her when she is in such agony.

Very recently though, I wonder if I may have come up with an explanation .... This is just supposition and the knowledge of NetDoctor, and I have yet top put it to any GP.
This month my close circle of friends and I realised that betweeen our 5 children there had been a case of thread worm. With further research into this parasite I read that this can cause a cystitis/thrush type aggravation in girls if the worm crawls toward the vagiina or urethra. I now wonder whether on previous occasions this may have been the cause of her urinary discomfort.
Apparently the worm has a life cycle of a month to three, I figure that if one of these blighters had crawled into her urinary tract and laid eggs - at night as they do. These egss would hatch after their time and probably cause some degress of aggravation down below. Since the thread worm is not a bacteria, but a parasitic infection they would unlikey show in any urine samples for infection and imagine would be flushed out with the passing of water; only for the cycle to repeat again in a few months as any anal worms might have gone unoticed and untreated.
Granted this does not explain a lack of itchy bottom complaints, but as I have noted within our circle of friends and children, not all the kids complained of ithcy bums with the current infestation. I can only suppose that the itchyness was not enough to disturb their precious sleep, as the pain did to the girls.

As I said, this is jus hypothesis at this stage, if your are about to visit a GP then please feel free to run it by him/her and see what their take is... For now I am watching and waiting and keeping a med cuboard stocked with Nurofen just incase... Not quite the "healthy2 diet I want to be sustaining my DD on though!!!!

That is interesting fayeleene. Do let me know if your theory proves to be true. Would thread worms just disappear of their own accord? Because we certainly never treated DD for worms.

Though I empathise with you and your girls, I'm also quite pleased that my DD isn't the only one to have had this problem.

If she is anything to go by, your DDs will grow out of this by the time they reach 10/11. I can't remember when my DD stopped having this problem, but she certainly hasn't had it since she started secondary school, and possibly before that.

That happened with us - girls would wake up in night in great pain and couldn't find anything until one night I looked in vaginal area, saw was a bit red and sore looking then I saw something moving and realised it WAS a threadworm! Eeeeurgh! I removed it very carefully with a cotton bud, washed with mild bicarb solution to soothe the soreness and then applied sudocrem. Never had itchy bottom symptoms but did have tummyaches and sore mins! Googled and found this is actually not uncommon. Did happen again a few times and after very careful inspection ( usually found the culprit hiding in a fold - giveaway was the inflammation and redness. Is very difficult to do in the early hours and half asleep with reluctant wriggling child! But I did explain that once I had found the culprit, the pain would stop and they did try to cooperate. Is not what I ever thought I would be doing tbh - had never heard of threadworms before this!
Now I dose with Ovex periodically to try to avoid getting them in the first place.

Fayeleen that is exactly what i thought was the problem - worms up the urethra. Anyway 10 days on and its still not sorted!!

sent home from school Monday with tummy pain and shivers, took to gp tues and temp of 42 and hallucinating. she said viral unless uti but couldnt get a sample. Took a sample down on wed and yes she had a uti ( but it wasnt there fri) and commenced on trimethaprim. Then friday morning complaining of a sore mini again and when i checked it was really red and hot to touch and she has a sore tongue so took the to the gp AGAIN thinking it was thrush but by this time i had put canesten on it and it looked fine. she seems to think it was vulva vaginitis - which you are suseptible when run down.

Now today is her last day for the anbx but again last night she was woken at midnight with a burning mini- really crying for a long time - had to have a bath and be rocked back to sleep after canesten and calpol.

I really am at a loss as to what to do next - i thought that as she has almost finished her anbx all would be cleared up now. I know that all the gp's i have seen are saying not worms but I am so tempted to just get something for it anyway.

I would - it is not going to do her any harm is it?
Also have a good look - is difficult when they are in pain BUT if you manage to find it/them (may be more than one) is instant relief! I used a cotton bud to remove BUT be careful as the area is very sore and the cotton bud may irritate the soreness. If you don't see anything, slather the area with sudocrem or vaseline - will help soothe.

I would also treat for worms just to see. If it goes away then all good and if it doesn't it certainly won't have done any harm.

I boil wash all bedding every time I wash them, to be safe. I also routinely treat the DC's with Ovex just like you would your puppy. Every three months in my house.

Also, teaching good hand hygiene helps - no fingers in mouth that one doesn't work with thumb sucking DD, lots of hand washing etc. Use a nail brush every day - each person in the house has their own nail brush, and I clean them in boiling water once a week.
