Is this normal with a throat infection?

DS aged 15mo vomited y'day and was v pale not eating etc, took him to docs and she said tonsils were v swollen and prescribed anti bios.

He's much worse today, vomited about 6 times and has had diahorrea all day. Not eating but drinking water ok. No wet nappies at all this eve despite all the water.

He's really pale and lifeless and looks so unwell. I'm so upset as he has never been sick so I'm finding it so hard to watch him suffer.

Does anyone know if these are normal symptoms with a throat infection, should i take him back to docs tomorrow or am I just panicking?

Take him back, could be glandular fever.
Sounds too ill to just be throat infection.
Keep an eye on temperature.

I would take him back. Could the diahorrea be from the anti bis? Poor thing, sounds miserable.

diarrhoea could be caused by the antibiotics.
but you know your child, Willow. i would go back to the Doctors.

also, I think that the lack of passing urine is not right. I don't want to worry you, but i think you need to get him checked again.

Trust your instincts OP, get him checked out again.

I'm not medically trained but your description of no wet nappies, pale, lifeless sound quite worrying to me.

I would consider calling your out of hours GP or NHS Direct for further advice. I know no one wants to be seen as a nuisance, but there's nothing to be list by being over cautious IMO.

Hope he brightens up very soon.

In little children, the glands in their tummy can swell along with their tonsils, which could account for the tummy upset. So could the antibiotics.
He needs dioralyte, not just water to replace salts- give him about an egg cup full every 15 minutes so that he has a better chance of keeping it down.
Don't hesitate to take him back if you're not happy.
I hope he is better soon.

He had diahorrea before he got the anti bios y'day so I don't think they are causing it. I'll def take him back tomorrow, not to be ageist but she was a very young doc and seemed to be scared of him iykwim, so just afraid she has missed something.

It is fairly common for some children to vomit and have diarrhea with a nasty throat infection.

DD1 went through a phase of being very sick with tonsilitis when she was younger (once on an 8 hour flight back from Orlando... )

I would take him to the GP though- sounds nasty.

I debated saying this, because I don't want to be alarmist. but my sister-in-law went into kidney failure as a child, through having strep throat (the bug damaged her kidneys. Rare, but proof that it happens. ring out of hours gp.

Damn should have had some dioralyte in him never thought of that, he's sleeping now, think I'll take him first thing in the morn. Although I will have to check him for diahorrea as I don't want it burning his skin through the night, so I will re-assess when he's wakened again.

If he carries on not having wet nappies then I would take him to A and E as that could be a sign of dehydration.

Brigit the bit about the young children does sound about right.But I'm particularly worried as he has ate very little for me over the past week, I put it down to him getting rubbish at MIL's, we have asked her to lay off the biscuits but perhaps there's more to it.

DD1 had recurrent tonsillitus as a young child,and would vomit for England.

Lifeless is a warning sign here. Please take him back and don't necessarily be leaving this until the morning. It is a rare thing for serious complications but my daughter saw medical professionals twice in 24hrs and then ended up in intensive care less than a further 12 hours later. Even at the first presentation she was "lifeless". They failed to act on a serious warning sign. Better to go and find that things are not too bad than to miss something serious here. More often than not it will be the former thankfully.

I say 'lifeless' as he's normally a real wee entertainer, but he has just been lying around and being very quiet (apart from when he cries). Bathed him tonight and no sign of rash, just the d&v and lack of food intake and the dry nappies really. Checked his fontanelle there and it's definately still hollow.

Take him back to hospital to be on the safe side. Best all round I think.

It s the dry nappies that are making me feel concerned.... Just get advice xxx

I'm not sure if your comment about no rash was in response to the meningitis link And if not I apologise but u must point put that if a child has the non blanching rash people associate with meningitis then this is because their blood is starting to be poisoned - this is a LATE symptom of meningitis

Just back from OOH doc, he's got a very bad bout of tonsillitis, and she thinks the d&v may be reaction to anti bios. Gave me a different one, says its better so hopefully it will do the trick.

Have to keep an eye on fluids closely and if he doesn't do anymore wet ones over the next few hours I have to take him back.

Oh the poor little chap, tonsilitis is the pits. Hope the new antibiotics work quickly.

Will he eat ice poles/lollies? They'll get liquid into him and the cold might help his throat x

Just in case anyones interested, went to my GP again who sent us to hospital as LO was slightly dehyrated, kept him in overnight to hydrate him, done blood tests and urine samples, all came back clear so they are putting it down to a viral infection. Got him back home today thank god.

He was very bright this evening so think he's over the worst of it at least. Thanks for all your help. Oh and I spent last night sleeping in a cot with him, its not a nice experience, no wonder our LO's wake so much!
