8year old DD has a sore lumpy nipple - advice please

Hi

My DD is 8 years old and has a sore nipple - when you touch it you can feel a lump in the centre of the nipple.

Has anyone experienced this? Should I be concerned and does she need to go to the Doctors?

Thanks for reading and any advice gratefully received.

Could it be her breast buds coming through? If you are concerened and its painful for her please do make a docs appointment to put your mind at ease

This sounds like normal breast development, which can certainly get going by 8 yrs old. Is the lump like a firm little disc, about a centimetre in size, just under the nipple? Does the nipple look slightly "puffier" than the other one?

If it seems unusual, do check with the GP, though.

If this is what it turns out to be, remember to reassure her that just because one has started developing before the other, it doesn't mean that she's going to end up with different sized ones! This apparently bothered my dd for ages before she got up the nerve to ask me.

Hi

Thanks for replying.

The lump seems to go straight down through the centre of the nipple and is quite a narrow lump.

Would breast development be 'normal' at 8?

Yes it would be normal for an 8 year old to have breast buds. It is only the very beginning of a long process and doesn't mean periods are imminent.

My 9 year old has just begun to develop them much to her disgust and they are just around the nipple, probably not more than 2cm across and very tender.

If you don't think this is what your DD has perhaps a trip to the GP just to be sure would be an idea.

Sounds like breast buds. I remember getting them about nine and being pretty horrified. I got one and it was ages before the other one appeared. Probably the reason why I have one boob slightly bigger than the other.

Mine got breast buds at 8 and started having occasional periods at 11. She's 13 and only starting to have regular periods now.
