Does this sound like nappy rash?

I've managed to raise dd for 5yrs and to get ds to 11mo without dealing with nappy rash. DS for the last couple of days has had a rash around his penis, particularly on his sac and just above it. It's red, slightly raised and scaly, quite dry. I've seen nappy rash on my nieces when they were tiny and it was all over their bottoms as well and a bit more moist iyswim.

I googled and it suggested the scaly patchy nature could be thrush. I don't want to whisk him off to see anybody with bog standard nappy rash but equally don't want to get to the weekend when everywhere's closed and it's actually fungal.

Can nappy rash be so localised and present as scaly and it's just nappy rash?

Am treating with bepanthen atm and increasing frequency of changes.

If it's thrush you could just put some Canesten on? I think it's fairly harmless?

I think I have some canesten. Just reluctant to start using something he doesn't need. Equally, I know if it is fungal, the bepanthen will only make it worse.
