Umbilical granulation

I went to the doctor last week as I was concerned about the healing of her belly button, I got sent away with fucidic cream. I had her 6 week check up on Monday and the doctor looking at her belly button says there's granulation there but to leave it for 2 weeks and to go back if it's not sorted itself out. It's weeping but there's no sign of infection. Looking today I'm concerned it's actually gotten worse - there's now a pink sore looking bit poking out, though a sliver of the sore looking bit actually looks skin colour so would that be it healing? I'm trying not to be PFB and run hysterically back to the doctor but it is concerning me. If it's started poking out does that mean it is getting worse? Or is that actually a good sign?

I would take her back to doc, you're concerned so must be something wrong. Mothers don't worry for nothing. First rule of motherhood trust your instinct!!
Could it be a umbilical hernia or is the belly button site not healing?

Had this with dd1. Try putting a small amount of table salt on it. By next nappy change the site had dried up, dropped off (the granulation bit) and left with perfect belly button. It really worked and did no harm. Doc had given me same news and said that he would consider some silver nitrate (iirc) on it so decided to try the salt trick first.

Alexw I'll admit I was also a bit nervous about the idea of putting salt on there, until a google search revealed this, this, and this. So before I go back to the GP again we're going to try it with salt, and hopefully it will resolve pretty quickly. I'll let you know if it works. If not I'll be following your advice chundle and heading back to the GP pronto. Thankyou both.

Had this with DD - bit of table salt works well. she had granuloma and hernia - all cleared up by first bday.

Well 20mins after having first sprinkled salt on it I noticed it starting to turn purple. Now 35mins after all of it has gone purple. They weren't kidding when they said it was fast!

No it's fine. It might just mean she has a cute little outie at the end of it. Both of mine had it, ds2 is 7 weeks and it's still there. Weeps most days. At six week check doc said to bring him back for a bit of silver nitrate in a month or so if it hasn't changed.

(Ds has outie, this was the little purple stumpy bit).

Yay. Glad it's working!
