Vomiting tonight, head injury yesterday - WWYD

Yesterday lunchtime my DS was playing outside at nursery and fell onto concrete.
No loss of consciousness or anything. Very bruised cheek, bleeding lip and a lovely lump / graze / bruise on forehead.

He was fine after a cuddle.

Last night he said his tummy was rumbling "his code for feeling sick, but it's so rare that he's sick I forgot that. He woke at 5:30 this morning and said the same. He was fine at nursery but said the same this evening.
At 11pm he started being sick all over his bed. He hasn't been able to keep water down and has been sick about 6 times in 2 hours.

He's alert and isn't complaining of a sore tummy. No other symptoms.

He's 3.8 and has only been sick about 3 times in his life.

Should I ring NHS direct / OOH GP for advice or wait and see how the night progresses.

I don't like to be a panic merchant and, doubtless, when I ring nursery in the morning they'll say "oh yes, loads have had it".

But I know very little about head injuries and subsequent symptoms... (and I like to avoid Google as I'll make a fool of myself by ringing an ambulance!!)

I'd ring OOH. You can't be too careful where a head injury is concerned. You won't be waisting their time, even if it turns out to be a bug. Good luck

Thanks for the swift reply. He's just fallen asleep on the sofa, so maybe it's over. I'll ring OOH anyway I think, ask if I should take him to GP in morning.

I would ring NHS Direct, or go to A&E to be on the safe side. Better to get checked out.

SkipTheLightFanjango · 20/07/2012 01:34

Hope all goes well..from memory they now advise to watch fr syptoms for up to 72 hours after a head injury so it's best to check!

VeremyJyle · 20/07/2012 01:40

My DS split his head open the other night and A&E Dr said to bring him straight back if he showed ANY signs of concussion, vomiting being one

Flyingwithoutwings · 20/07/2012 01:42

Ahhh, now that I didn't know!!
Just rung. Waiting for call back.
Now that he's been sick and I remember what he means by "tummy rumbling", I can say that it was 8 hrs after the injury that he first felt sick. He has the constitution of an ox and takes a lot for him to be sick so I wonder if he's been fighting it for 24 hrs until it all got too much.

He's snoring on the sofa at the moment Smile

Thanks for the reassurance that I'm not being PFB Wink

Hope he is okay?Sad
You did the right thing, going to A&E, as it may be concussion x

WhyIRayLiotta · 20/07/2012 01:58

Hope little one is ok. It's better to get checked out - if only for peace of mind.

Pinot · 20/07/2012 10:04

I would go straight to A&E. Concussion is not one to be meek about :(

How is he?

Flyingwithoutwings · 20/07/2012 14:48

Just home. They tested for a bug but he had no temp and nothing in urine. He had been sick as I'd packed the car with change bag and towels etc Sad
He was sick in a&e Sad
Had to give him water via syringe: 6ml every 5 mins to try and hydrate him.
Finally he kept that down.

As no obvious sign of bug they admitted him onto children's assessment unit for the rest of the night. I had to catch 20 winks on the bed with him.

Paediatrician says its most likely a virus that has coincided with injury but we may never know. But his reactions are fine so even if concussion, he's unlikely to have caused any lasting issue with brain.
I have a 24 hour pass to return to the unit if he worsens.

He's now refusing food so I'm hopeful it's a bug.

Thanks again ladies... Off to bed now with my little pickle!!
