Ds2 is anaemic

Ds2 had some blood tests recently as he often wakes up with severe pains in his legs and the gp wanted to rule things out. Hosp have just phoned to say he has low iron levels and is anaemic- feeling v. guilty, I thought he ate a decent diet- he loves veg, unlike ds1, and his fav is brocoli. He doesnt eat much red meat, and drinks MASSEs of milk ( but isnt that low in iron??)

What else can I do to up his iron levels?

dried apricots, leafy green veg, red lentil soup, plenty of fruit for vit c. I give my dc Floradix as a boost.

If he drinks fresh orange with iron rich foods it will aid absorption.

What about spinach in a salad? Broccolli as you say, any other dark green veg. Will he eat beans? Cereal fortified with iron? Apricots? Nuts? Tofu? Green peppers?

They may prescribe iron supplements.

Yes , he loves beans and spinach- will try dried apricots and nuts- he only likes milk and water to drink, doesnt like any juice/squash at all. They said they will prescribe supplements, but it was an answer phone message so didnt get any detail, will have an appt with gp later.

Red lentil soup- that sounds yummy, will give it a go.

Thanks all
