DD id 9 months old and 20lb.
She has Chicken Pox ( DS started two weeks ago today, just about over it now). She is v itchy! Piriton bottle says not to give under 12 months. Really, not even a tiny bit for a big baby (she is 91st centile for weight and height. There ate plenty of 1 year olds smaller than her).

I wouldnt unless it had been ok'd by a doctor. You wouldnt know what dose to give either

nellyjelly · 10/07/2012 20:59

Is nhs still going? Ask them. Or phone out of hours and ask a doc to give a phone consultAtion. They will advise. I have done this myself.

It acts as a sedative- not sure I'd risk it for a younger baby.

Sirzy · 10/07/2012 21:10

I wouldn't without talking to a GP to ensure that any dose given is the right amount

salvadory · 10/07/2012 21:30

You can give it to under 1's. I checked with a pharmacist and the BNF (medicine info bible for healthcare people) said give at 1ml dose/24hours (usual dose is 2.5ml).
It's supposed to be prescribed by a GP but my 5 month old has had it (due to horrendous baby eczema) to no ill effects.
Can you call your out of hours GP to check first?

Thank you everyone. Forgot to say we are away from home, so normal things like pharmacist and OOH seem more tricky than usual.

Unfortunately you are unlikely to get a chemist to OK for under 1 year old as it needs prescribing by a dr. Its certainly given but it the technicality issue!

Saw a pharmacist today who said she could nit recommend that we give DD any Piriton because it is not licenced for under ones, but, when it is prescribed to U1s dose is 1ml/day. And she sold us a syringe. I have given.DD 1 ml this pm.

DS was prescribed piriton at 6 months old for allergic reactions. Dosage 2.5ml.

sneezecakesmum · 12/07/2012 21:21

I like that pharmacist! Bit of a nod and wink going on! Usually they are real sticklers.

Like Trixy, my DS was prescribed it at 6 months for food allergies, dose 2.5 ml.
