Astigmatism

My ds (4) has been for an eye test and the optician has discovered that he has an astigmatism and will need to wear glasses. He is long sighted, more so in one eye. She said that it was good that we had discovered this fairly soon as he could have developed a lazy eye.

Can anyone tell me what to expect here so I can explain it to him?
