Baby boy and problems urinating

Hello, I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced what we're struggling with at the moment?
Our 20 month old son was screaming in agony and appeared to be struggling to pass urine. There looked like a swelling/bulge at the base of his penis and he was in absolute agony. We took him to A+E and, after several tests, we still aren't any nearer to finding out what the problem is. There was talk of him needing circumcised, having Balanitis (an infection), having a urine infection, being constipated, having his kidneys & bladder scanned. He was really poorly with the symptoms, then fine for 5 days and then really poorly again. He seems to be ok again at the moment but we're having more investigations tomorrow (hopefully!).
I've never posted a question on here as I usually find what I'm looking for by browsing. However, we're really baffled and worried by his symptoms and the doctors seem a bit baffled too. They seem related to him needing to wee but then other times he's absolutely fine?
I'm hoping someone has a similar tale to tell? Any ideas?
Thank you.

Have you seen your GP? S/he should be able to refer you to the relevant department for appropriate follow-up and any necessary tests.

My DS is 2.11yo and while he hasn't had swelling he has times when the tip of his penis has been very red and sore looking and any attempt to touch it for cleaning or a closer look has resulted in him crying his eyes out that it's 'poorly' (his way of saying sore).

My GP was really good, he said lots of little boys get infections, especially those still in nappies as the penis is rubbing against the nappy and it's in there with wee/poo/sweat, etc. He said that most cases don't need circumcision or even antibiotics (except where there are obvious signs of illness, like in your case with temperature and pain) and the vast majority have no further infections once they're out of nappies.

The things I did were to leave his nappy off as much as possible when we were at home. I also gave him showers rather than baths during the times when his penis seemed sore. I changed him more often, not to say that he wasn't changed often anyway (that sort of reads like he was in one nappy all day!) but I changed him an average of around 8-9 times a day instead of 5-6. I also stopped using soap for washing him and started using a water-based bath wash instead (I don't know the brand, the HV gave it to me) designed for sensitive skin.

He's almost potty trained now and fingers crossed it all seems to have calmed down. Definintely see your GP though.

Hi, I know this thread is old but I wondered if the original poster ever got an outcome as we’re in a similar situation and nobody has yet been able to help us!! Tia
