Orthopaedic referral. Routine for Asthmatic Child?

Has anyone any experience of an orthopaedic referral for an asthmatic child?

We got a letter totally unexpectedly confirming a place for dd on the hospitals Orthopaedic outpatient waiting list.

She has asthma and is on Seretide, Ventolin and Singulair. She has had many hospital admissions since she was 18 months old. She is 6 now and has improved a lot.

We were never told about a referral and don't have any concerns about her for anything other than the asthma.

Just wondering if this is routine for asthmatics as I know there can be concerns about growth when taking steroids.

I'll find out when I ring on Monday but I am just puzzled by it as it was never mentioned to us that this might come up.

We never had one but had a few others (like a renal specialist when she kept getting utis).

At the time, like you, I did think a bit like surely this must be a waste of time and a bit like should i panic. In hindsight, it was really reassuring to see a specialist and just have a general chat about what we should look out for re any problems etc

Hope it all goes well!

Thanks fox. It's just so unexpected and we must be on the waiting list quiet a while as the letter went to our old address and we moved a couple of years ago.

I'm trying not to worry - if it was anything other than routine surely the paed would have mentioned it to us at some stage. We saw him fairly recently and he was happy with dd's progress and general health (of course in typical fashion she has had 2 attacks since but we see him again in August)

When I ring on Monday to confirm/cancel dd's place on the waiting list I am hoping someone can tell me who referred her and why.

It might be an error - a 2 year wait would be unusual.

DD was under various clinics as a child because of her asthma. We regularly attended a clinic because she had delayed growth due the the levels of steroids she took.

Sadly yes. We see dd's paed privately but seems we got put on the public list for the orthopaedic referral and 2 years seems about right to be called.

Public healthcare is in a mess here.
