Is this really chickenpox?

The three year old I look after has had about eight raised red spots on his face and two on his back since Tues evening.

They haven't got any better or worse, haven't spread elsewhere. They are not blistery looking or itchy. He has had no temperature and is eating well and being his usual energetic self. They look just like bites which is what we thought they were, however nursery asked us to take him to the doctor to get a certificate to say he wasn't contagious.

The doctor said chickenpox as soon as I mentioned spots, without even looking at them, he agreed that they weren't typical pox spots but because there wasn't anything else it could be, it must be chickenpox and he has to be kept at home till next Friday.

Has anyone else's child had chickenpox that presented like this? I've looked after lots of kids with chickenpox and even when they have a mild case with only a few spots, the spots do look like blisters.
