2yr old DS foreskin infection

Hi,

I wondered if anyone had any experience with this?

Took DS to the local A&E last night as he was tugging at his nappy, when I took his nappy off his penis was very swollen and very, very red!
The doctors at the hospital gave us some antibiotics to give him for the next 5 days but no creams or anything to apply.

I think I will have to be off all week as he has to have the antibiotics every 4 hours along with calpol and at the nursery he goes to aren't allowed to administer any medicines.

I am planning on keeping him nappy free most of the week hoping that fresh air will do him some good, but I also don't want him to knock it or catch it on anything.

Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this with their DS's and if there was anything else I should be doing?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is it a recurring problem or is this the first time?

If it's the first I would just do as you said. If it's recurring you need to go to your gp to see if he needs a referral. He may have a tight foreskin in which case there are steroid creams and stretching exercises you can do to help.

Does his foreskin 'balloon' when he wees and is he having trouble emptying it? This can cause infection.

Ds1 had this at about the same age - he also was given antibiotics and it cleared up pretty quickly. But the GP referred us to a paediatrician anyway & they thought ds's foreskin was a bit "stuck down". So ds1 had a tiny op under GA a few months later to free it and he never had any further problems.

So you could ask the GP to check your ds's foreskin once the infection has settled. Hope he's better soon.

Thanks for the replies.

This is the first time he's ever had anything like this.
I've never noticed that his foreskin was tight or bulging after urinating, nothing unusual to report at all, which was why it was a bit of a shock!

I will give him a cool, plain bath tonight and once his infection has cleared up (soon hopefully!) I will get him checked over by the GP just to be sure.

Thanks for all the advice Smile

I forgot to mention he's not having trouble going for a wee or anything and he slept right through the night and when he woke up his nappy was very full of wee, the doctors told me to keep my eye on this.

That actually sounds quite encouraging.

I hope he feels better soon poor thing. :)

Ds had this once. It was a week we'd been on holiday, so I wondered if getting sand in had had any effect on it. He's only had it once, and the main thing was he wet the bed every night, having not wet it before.
