DS had his grommets fit this week and we havent dared bath him yet but i guess he will be stinky soon. Sooo hit me with your tips - we were told to lather cotton wool in vaseline and pop it in outside bit of ear, his ear stil has a lot of flakey blood around it that looks grim they said will fall out naturally i hope it does before Monday. Anyway i was expecting a check up in 6 weeks but was told after op we wouldnt be seen for 12 weeks and we shouldnt swim till after then - im a bit alarmed it will be so long, well maybe alarmed is a bit dramatic but we have a holiday booked in august with a ncie pool typically! I think i am a bit worried about bath time Confused. Humour meSmile

What we have done with grommets (ds has had them twice) is normal baths are fine. If you're washing hair then cotton wool in the ears. Ds used to call them his clouds in his ears.

The blood will come out naturally. Very tempting to try and remove it, but we didn't.

We had check up after 6 weeks, but it is just a quick peek in the ear and a hearing test. They said swimming was fine before then. If you think there is a problem you should be able to get a sooner appointment, we've done that before now, when waiting for a check up.

For swimming they say put ear plugs in, but we found they get ds very distressed as he can't hear at all. So he has a swim hat we pull down over his ears. He doesn't go under the water anyway at present, may be a different thing if/when he starts wanting to bob under the water.

well he said his ears hurt with the band on so we said wed just put the clouds in lathered in vaseline and he started freaking out on us not letting us put them in shouting "the lady said dont poke anything in no no no" so dh had to be all empathetic whilst my stress levels went mental then he agreed if i washed his hair quick dh could hold the clouds loosely in place . Dear god till the grommets come out i can see bath time being a complete stress,,,,,,,,, mind i have already delegated boys baath time to DH. Sad

Ds objected at first to the clouds, he was only 20 months at a time. Within a couple of months he'd object if he didn't have clouds in his ears, and tell others they'd forgotten their clouds if they were washing hair.

We generally put it in dry, as he found the wet feeling really unpleasant.

The first lot stayed in about 18 months. They came out and he then had 8 perforations over about 3 months, so they put in 2nd set. One of them came out after about 9 months, and is still sitting in his ear canal looking like a white hama bead collecting wax nearly 5 months later. The other is still in there, or was about a month ago when they last looked.

I find he does sometimes have ear pain without an infection. Calpol usually helps.

Arround the time his grommet was coming out he seemed to have ringing in the ear. He's not terribly keen on telling me about his ears as he hates antibiotics, but his behaviour was poor and he was complaining that the fridge was making a noise wherever he went.
