Hi all
Ds came down with chicken pox on the 13th, we are supposed to be going on holiday abroad on the 24th what are the chances?

Ds was crusty and fit for school on 8th day so I'd say you may be ok by then. Would you need a note from dr confirming he's no longer contagious though? Because he'll probably still have scabby spots.

Seona1973 · 16/06/2012 10:06

they normally scab over within 5-7 days so you should be ok. As pp said you may need a 'fit to fly' letter from your gp

miaboo · 16/06/2012 17:32

Do they all blister or scab over? He has some spots which seem smooth and look like there fading already , but he also has some very nasty ones that are red and blistered and some that are scabbing/crusty to!.
If he itches any do they then become infectious again even though the were scabbed?

Depends... If you are flying then you need to check your airlines policy. Some say you can fly 7 days after the last spot appeared. You will need a doctors note proving fit to fly.

Anybody else got anything to add, I'm frantically looking for hope! Hmm , I have a 19 month as well what are the chances of him getting it to?!

I'd be more worried that the 19mth old is going to come down too i'm afraid. Usually 2 weeks after the first one did

tvfriend · 17/06/2012 15:39

Just finished with it all here
DS 's spots first appeared on the Friday night- they were crusted over and he was back to nursery the following Thursday (prob would have been OK on the Wed but not a nursery day).
DD got it on the Friday 2 weeks later and was back to school the Friday after.
I'd also say that you're probably fine with the older one. IF the younger one gets it you'll probably just have flown before the spots come out as it's usually 2-3 weeks after they're exposed. Some would say that he may well be contagious when flying as you are contagious a couple of days before the spots come and you probably shouldn't fly BUT he might not get it so unless he has spots I would wouldn't worry.

Sorry but I'd imagine you'll probably have another one down with it too. The incubation period is two weeks after first contact. If the 19mo doesn't have it at the time of flying and your DS is well enough to fly (and scabbed over), just keep him covered and away from the stewardesses! There is normally a Dr available in the airport to assess anyone as fit to fly should there be a query.

Do you have insurance should the 19mo develop chicken pox and you want to see a Dr abroad? Also in case you want to cancel the whole trip?

miaboo · 17/06/2012 17:33

I really dont want to cancel as I am 30 weeks pregnant, travelling when 31 weeks so wont be able to go after that, I'm so stressed out and upset as we thought it would me that wouldnt be able to go and on the same day ds got the pox I got my fit to fly note!
If we had to cancel how do the insurers pay you back if its the original method which was a creditcard then we woudnt be able to afford another holiday as we no longer have access to this creditcard, would the airline transfer the whole holiday to a later date?
so stressed and unhappy and have cried lots as dh is also working away so dealing with everything on my own :(

Hi OP, I've PM'd you about the holiday, it should be simple to salvage and get postponed for another date-don't worry though x

miaboo · 22/06/2012 07:34

well it's Friday, due to go on Sunday and no spots yet but trying very hard not to get hopes up! I know this could all change in a matter of hours and I'm sick of spot watching!!
