Constipated Baby, advice needed

Hi my baby is 7 weeks today and hasn't been for a poo for 2 days. Before this she was having about 15 dirty nappies a day as I was breastfeeding, howver, since I have started giving her formula (as well as feeding her a two or three times a day myself she has become constipated at least I think she is, I am not sure as she hasn't actually done a poo so I don't know if it is hard or not)! I have tried a little sugar in boiled water and fresh orange in boiled water and I have cycled her legs and massaged her tummy as well as given her warm baths... as yet nothing has worked. She is still sleeping ok and seems to be feeding ok but is straining a lot as if she is trying to do something but can't also she is quite windy and it is smeller than usual! I may be worrying unduly but I don't really know what else to try.... any advice would be really gratefully received.... at what point should I think about taking her to the doctors??? Thank you in advance....

Formula fed babies poo slightly less and it maybe smellier. Clearly she is now adjusting to the formula so prepare yourself for an explosive poo when you least want it (eg when you are out and about) - only go out fully prepared because it will happen. Once she has adjusted she should become more regular again (mind you 15 dirty nappies a day seems rather a lot).

Is she on SMA? SMA gave my DS constipation. I switched to Aptamil, problem solved.

Hi she is on Aptamil although I am now feeding her in the day myself to see if that helps, she still hasnt been I think maybe it is worrying me more than her now! dikkerj when I say 15 dirty nappies there wasn't always a lot of poo but I have to say that she was going a lot more than my son ever did! Thank you both for the advice I suppose I just need to be patient, I just don't like to see her straining and nothing happening!!!!

I am going through exactly the same problem with my twin dd's at the moment, all as you describe. Just wondering how things have panned out?

My DD did the same at about 8wks, she went 4 days before 'exploding', then another 4 days. I saw the HV after 2 days and she advised tummy massage pushing her knees up and to keep feeding normally. As it was her 8wk check the doctor also felt her tummy and said babies can go up to a week constipated and isf she wasn't upset not to worry. He gave me a prescription to get things moving but I didn't use it. She's fine now and poos lots!

Same happened with my DD after we switched to formula from BF... Took her to Dr as poo was every 4/5 days, Dr gave prescription for lactulose but this really upset her tummy. In the end I switched her to Hipp Organic when she was about 9 weeks and we haven't looked back, almost immediately her pooping increased to every 1 or 2 days, and now she poops daily (15 weeks old).

i'm not sure how mixed feeding would work, but i EBF my son, and he used to go 7 days between poos, and it is perfectly normal for a BF baby to go up to 10 days without pooing, as they get efficient at digesting the milk and there is a lot less waste....but those poos were rather big and you had to be on watch so that we changed him as soon as he did them or else it got messy!! conveniently his weekly poo always happened at the weekend, whilst it was Daddy's nappy duty time :)
