How Long For A Small Hand Bone Fracture to Heal ??

DD has fractured the little finger side long hand bone - aka 5th metacarpal bone, at the top, just underneath her wrist - on the outside of her hand.

Childrens A&E was a bit of a nightmare as it is, very long wait without food & I'm ill myself, so not best equipped for dealing with getting the best info & TBH I was none too impressed by the Nurse who strapped her up :( (though the rest of the staff were wonderful)

After speaking with the Doctor post Xray, we were told a nurse would be along soon to strap it up, Doctor explained how & why it would be strapped & said 3 weeks recovery before splint could be removed & explained importance of keeping hand moving etc, but without pressure on the bone, or risk the finger numbness continuing

Nurse took ages to come to strap up - realised when she did turn up that she had been standing chatting for over an hour she was pretty abrupt, no skills with talking to DCs at allHmm - Doctor had explained two outer fingers would be strapped together to stabilise the fractured bone - Nurse put a bit of white pad between DDs fingers & held it with 2 tiny bits of tape - when I politely questioned this, as it looked very flimsy & I couldn't see anyway way DD could keep this clean, stroppy nurse told me "thats it, she'll just have too" - she gave absolutely no info on pain management, nor I realised after she'd gone on follow up treatment Confused

Thankfully I already know how to medicate DD for pain, but I had to go back in & ask what happens next as I didn't hear her instructions on follow up care, did we go back to GP, or fracture clinic ?? - she said there would be no follow up - take the splint off after 2 weeks & that was itShock - this contradicted the Doctors advice - & unfortunately DD heard Nurse, not Doctor, so I'm going to have a fight on my handsHmm

I was also a bit gobsmacked that on hearing her send the friend of a girl who was obviously in massive pain, down to a local Asda to by CoCodamol - a round trip of about 1,1/2 hr by bus, because they had none to give her - I offered the over the counter & still labelled etc box from my handbag - only to get a stroppy NO - seemed daft leaving the poor girl who only looked about 15 sitting in agony for an hour and a half for OTC drugs Confused

Anyway, sadly in short I didn't feel I could trust this nurses opinion, especially as she contradicted the Doctor & I wonder if anyone else has had, or knows about recovery/follow up for this sort of injury in a 9 yr old DD

TIA

I would get in touch with your gp after the weekend. They should at some point get a report from the a&e and an X-ray report and make a better judgement with the full facts in front of them. Anything I said would be just guessing. Surprised no fracture clinic appt.

Thanks for the reply, thats actually a good idea I had thougt it would take months for any report to come through, but I'm hoping as we saw our GP first she's been on the ball & chased it up.

I'm very surprised at no follow up too, hence my post, DD has been very accident prone, so not the first fracture or sprain & there has always been follow up beforeConfused
