I have a 6 month old baby boy who has no health problems inc no bowel issues. I'm probably being totally neurotic but I don't know. When I watch my little man opening his bowels just inside his anus looks really sore! There is no blood but it looks raw and visably sore. He dosnt show any signs that its sore when he's pooing. He's not constipated. Is this the normal anatomy of a baby! Can any one offer me some advice. I could ask the HV put just checking first.

Cloud he have a touch of nappy rash? Ds sometimes has a redder bum than normal but a slather of cream and it clears up quickly.

Hello, thanks for your reply. No its not nappy rash as its not external on his bum. His bottom area looks fine, no redness, its just when I change a nappy and he happens to
be pooing, inside the anus as the poo is coming out you can see it looks red and raw! I don't know if that's normal anatomy or not! That's why I am asking as ihe is my first so I haven't got any experience or previous knowledge.

If its barely visible (the redness that is) when he is NOT pooing, then it is just normal mucous membrane. Same as in the mouth lol

If he's not in pain I suspect he's fine. It'll look pink/red and raw because its his innards.

GlaikitFizzog · 30/05/2012 20:05

Well I think the inside bit is meant to be a bIt pinker than normal skin. There are a lot of blood vessels there. If he is happy enough I would think he was ok. Babies are good at telling us when things aren't right. :)

Thats just what the inside of your rectum looks like.

I knew people would think I'm being mad! I understand what normal mucus membrane is however it looks like a wound rather then an anatomical hole if you see what I mean.

Maybe let the Hv have a quick look next time you are in then. It's difficult to say on t'internet if it's normal or not. At least they can confirm one way or another for you.
