Irritable hip - no ibuprofen??

Went to A&E today with DS2 (20 months) who couldn't walk - sent home with diagnosis of irritable hip. Which is all fine - but most of the things I've read on here and elsewhere recommend giving ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation. But doctor just recommended Calpol, and when I specifically asked whether I should give ibuprofen to reduce the swelling, he said no, better to give Calpol. I'm not worried about the pain aspect, because DS doesn't seem particularly bothered - but if ibuprofen would help him get better more quickly then I obviously want to give it. Anyone know any reason why I shouldn't??

Have you been told its transative synovitis? DS1 had/has this still.

We always give him ibuprofen because it works fast we and we have been told it is better for inflamtion.

Yes, the hospital said it's transient synovitis. The day after the hospital trip he woke up in pain, so I decided to give him ibuprofen regardless of the doctor. He's been basically fine since (that was two days ago now) - just the occasional twinge, but he's walking fine.

Does he have any problems with his stomach. Reflux? Has he ever? If he has, that'll be why they suggested carpool rather than ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is tough on stomachs.
